Italy is a country in south-central Europe. Two of the largest Mediterranean islands belong to the country, Sardinia in the west and Sicily in the south. Italy shares land border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north. Italy shares maritime borders with Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Greece, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Spain, and Tunisia.

Italy divided into 20 regions. 18 regions are divided into 80 active provinces, 2 autonomous provinces, 6 free municipal consortia, 14 metropolitan cities. "Aosta Valley" region is not divided into provinces. Aosta Valley region is divided into 74 comuni. "Friuli Venezia Giulia" region is subdivided into 18 unioni territoriali intercomunali. Provinces are divided into "Comuni" or municipalities.
Rome is the capital of Italy.
