How to Reach Bangalore

Kempegowda International Airport (IATA Code- BLR) is an international airport, about 30 km north of the city near the suburb of Devanahalli. It is named after Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore. Kempegowda International Airport is the third-busiest airport by passenger traffic, air traffic movements and domestic and total cargo handled in India, after the airports in Delhi and Mumbai.

Transportation in Bangalore

The Bangalore Metro provides the option of Smart Tokens and Smart Cards for travel.

Smart Tokens: Token for single journey at cost 10 Rupees (US$ 0.12). Use it in entry station gate and exit station gate, then it will be useless.

Contactless Smart Cards: For multiple journeys. Minimum cost is 50 Rupees (US$ 0.61) and the fare is deducted after each use. You will get discounts of 15% to 23% as compared to the tokens.

Varshik Cards: The “Varshik” is a refillable card that stores credit of up to 1,500 Rupees (US$ 18.23). The fare is deducted after each use. The minimum fare is 8.50 Rupees (US$ 0.10).
Sanchar Cards: The “Sanchar” is a multi-trip card that can be used for up to 100 trips between two fixed points. It is designed for those who always travel on the same route. Fares are cheaper than those offered on the Varshik card. The minimum fare is 7.65 Rupees (US$ 0.093) if a minimum of 100 trips are purchased in advance.


Group Tickets: These are paper tickets and they can be issued to a group of ten members travelling between same stations.

Metro-Bus Ticket (MBT) Day Pass: It is an integrated metro and bus travel ticket that offers unlimited journeys for the whole day for Smart Card holders. A “Saral” ticket costs 110 Rupees (US$ 1.34) and is valid for travel on air conditioned buses (but not on Airport buses). A “Saraag” ticket costs 70 Rupees (US$ 0.85) and is only valid for travel on the Metro rails and non-air conditioned buses.

How to go: It starts from Mysore Bank Building (north end), which is about 750 meters from east end of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Metro Station, Majestic towards east and about 350 meters from Sir M Visveswaraya Station, Central College Subway station towards southwest. The road ends at NR Road (south end) near KR Market.


KR Market

City Market

It is the largest wholesale market in Banglore was established in 1928. A new concrete 3-story structure was built in the 1990s between the two older buildings. It considered to be one of the biggest flower markets in Asia.
How to  go: It is lcoated at the west side of the south end of Avenue Road. Chickpet Subway station is nearest metro station of the market.


Bangalore Fort

Bangalore Fort was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I (27 June 1510 – 1569), a leader of a tribal society under the Vijayanagara Empire. It was a mud fort.
There is a story behind this that, during the construction of the fort, it was said that the southern gate would collapse before it was built, and human sacrifices were indicated to ward off evil spirits. When Kempe Gowda would not accept human sacrifice, his daughter-in-law Lakshamma, realizing her father-in-law's plight, decapitated herself with a sword at the southern gate in the dark of night. Then the fort was completed without any mishap. In her memory, Kempe Gowda built a temple in her name at Koramangala.
Later Rustam-i-Zaman captured the fort and handed over its management along with other territories to Shahji. This mud fort was enlarged between 1673 AD and 1704 AD. In 1761, it was renovated by Hyder Ali (father of Tipu Sultan), who reinforced it with stone.
In March 1791, the British East India Company army besieged Bangalore Fort from Tipu Sultan. The British began dismantling it, a process that continued until the 1930s. Remains of the fort today are Delhi Gate and remnants of two forts.

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace was the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan.
Hyder Ali, Father of Tipu Sultan, started its construction and it was completed in 1791 during the reign of Tipu Sultan. After the death of Tipu Sultan on 4 May 1799, the British administration used the palace for its secretariat before moving to Attara Kachari in 1868.
The ground floor rooms have been converted into a small museum. It exhibits various achievements of Tipu Sultan and his administration.
Visiting Time: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Sree Dharmaraya Swamy Temple

The Dharmaraya Swamy Temple was built 800 hundred years ago by the Thigalas, an agricultural community.
Karaga Festival is celebrated in March and April.

Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara

Hindu Temple

This cave temple dedicated to Shiva in Bengaluru is a well visited temple. Built by Gautama Maharshi and Bharadwaja Muni in Vedic period (from late Bronze Age and early Iron Age). Renovated by Kempe Gowda (27 June 1510 – 1569), founder of Bengaluru.
Thousands of devotees visit this cave temple on Makar Sankranti every year in mid-January. It is a special day when the sun rays fall on the Shivalinga for an hour.
How to go: It is located about 2 km from Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace toards northwest. and near southeast of Jinke Park. About 1.3 km from National College Subway station towards west.


Bugle Rock Park

Kempe Gowda II, who came to power in 1585, built four watchtowers, including one on the Bugle Rock (on the southern border), to mark the limits of Bangalore's expansion. It is said that at sunset a sentry would blow the bugle and hold a torch which was visible from the other three watch towers. Bugle Rock is a massive rock that is about 3,000 million years old. Most of the rocks on the Bugle Rock, next to the Bull Temple, have hollows, which were once used to light lamps. This landmark is spread over an area of 16 acres (6.5 hectares). This rock is similar to the rock of Lalbagh Tower.
The small park with the natural rock formations, has also waterfalls and fountains. There are three temples in the park. The densely tree-lined park is considered a "walker's paradise". There is an amphitheater, which can seat 300 people. The Hindu temple Dodda Bashavna Guri or Bull Temple, said to be the largest Nandi temple in the world, and a Ganesha temple border the park. The Bull Temple was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda.

How to go: It is located about 850 meters from Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara towards southeast and 1 km from National College Subway station towards southwest.


MN Krishna Rao Park

How to go: It is located about 390 meters from Bugle Rock Park towards east. About 670 meters from National College Subway station towards south and about 480 meters from Lalbagh Subway station towards southwest.


Lalbagh Botanical Garden

Hyder Ali commissioned the building of this garden in 1760 but his son, Tipu Sultan, completed it.
The foundation stone of the Glass House, modeled after London's Crystal Palace, was laid by Prince Albert Victor on 30 November 1889 and was built during the tenure of John Cameron.
Lalbagh is a 240 acres garden has four gates. Inside the garden, there is a bonsai garden, a Topiary Garden, Rose Garden and Lotus Garden. An artificial waterfall and Lalbagh Lake are located inside the garden. Flower shows are conducted every year during the week of Republic day (January 26) and Independence day (August 15).
How to go: It is located about 360 meters from M.N. Krishna Rao Park towards east. It is located east side of Lalbagh Subway station.

You can join evening Satsang where youngsters who sing, dance and meditate to songs in praise of the various gods and oddesses. They have different types of meditaion courses.
How to go: From NICE Ring Road go south through Kanakapura Road about 3.63 km. You will reach here.


Thottikallu Falls

Popularly known as TK falls and locally known as Swarna Mukhi falls. To enjoy the beauty, you must go during rainy season.
Try to visit on a weekend or a holiday, so you'll get plenty of crowds. Otherwise try to go in large groups to avoid looting. Because the place is a bit risky. It's nothing special, so you can skip this place.
How to go: Art of Living International Center, go towards south about 3 km to Kaggalipura bus stop and from there hire an auto to Muneshwara Temple which is situated under a huge tree is at the entrance of the TK falls. Fare around 300-350 rupees (US$ 4.25). Then walk 500 meters to the falls from Parking area.

Turn left and continue 1 km and a right turn at Somanahalli village and a further 2 km drive will get you to Prani. It is just outside of Bengaluru City.


Pyramid Valley International

The Maitreya Buddha Pyramid inside the Pyramid Valley occupies a base area of 160x160 feet and is 102 feet high. It can accommodate about 5,000 meditators at a time. The Pyramid is constructed on the principles of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The King’s Chamber is located at the center of the Pyramid.

How to go: Go through Bannerghatta Main Road about 1.5 km from Adugodi Christian Cemetery towards south. You will reach Dairy Circle and you will see over bridge. Turn right (west) and go about 520 meters and you will reach the museum.

 

Ragigudda Sri Prasanna Anjaneya Temple

Hindu Temple

It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The temple was formed in 1969 and registered in 1972.
The temple also has a Shivalinga along with temples of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman in the same area. The temple is on a hill. At the base of the hill there is a small temple dedicated to Ganesha, Navagraha and Goddess Rajarajeshwari.
Each December the festival of Sri Hanumajjayanthi (the birth of Lord Hanuman) is celebrated as a 12-day event at the temple. During this time, a big fair is held around the temple.
Visiiting Time: Monday to Thursday - 8 to 11:30 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM. Saturday and Sunday - 8 AM to 12:30 PM and 5 PM to 8:30 PM.
How to go: It is located about 2.8 km from NIMHANS Brain Museum towards south and 1.9 km from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road Subway station towards southeast at Jayanagara 9th Block, Jayanagar. Or from Dairy Circle, Go to about 2.5 km south through Bannerghatta Main Road and you will reach Gopalan Innovation Shopping mall. Turn right (west) and go 700 meters and you will reach to the temple.


Puttenahalli Lake

It is a 10-hectare small lake.
How to go: Go about 3 km from Gopalan Innovation Shopping mall through Bannerghatta Main Road towards south till Cinepolis SJR Arekere (Central Mall). Turn right (west) and go about 1.1 km and you will reach the lake.

Also known as Hulimave cave temple has been declared as a 2000 year old single rock cave. The temple is placed within the natural cave inside the rocks. It was stated that the temple is as old as 4–5 hundred years.
How to go: Go to 1.64 km from Cinepolis SJR Arekere (Central Mall) through Bannerghatta Main Road towards south to near BGS National Public School at Cave Temple Road, Pai Layout, Hulimavu.

How to go: It starts from Mumbai Highway (north end) near Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre, about 2.5 km from Nagasandra Subway station towards northwest. The road headed to south and finally to east and end at Hosur Road near Chirayu TechZone Park.


Begur Fort

Over a 1000 years old, Begur Fort was a made of mud.
How to go: It is located about 2.6 km from Hulimave Cave Temple towards southeast at Akshaya Residency, Akshayanagar.


Sri Panchalinga Nageshwara Gudi

Temple Complex

Two temples within the temple complex, Nageshvara and Nageshvarasvami were commissioned during the reigns of Western Ganga Dynasty kings Nitimarga I (reigned 843–870) and Ereyappa Nitimarga II (reigned 907–921).
How to go: It is located about 800 meters from Begur Fort towards northeast. It is on the northwest corner of Begur Lake.

The building now accommodates the Karnataka High Court. In the Central Hall a portrait of Sir Mark Cubbon decorates the ceiling. An equestrian statue of Cubbon by Baron Marochetti is located at the back of the building.

CSI St. Mark's Cathedral

The foundation stone was laid in 1808, and construction was completed in 1812 as a garrison church of the Madras Army of the East India Company. A new building was constructed in August 1902. But the new church building collapsed, and had to be rebuilt again in 1906. On 17 February 1923, The church building was damaged by fire and the renovation works were about to be completed in February 1924, but the church building again collapsed. Reconstruction of the church started in 1926 and was completed in 1927. The pipe organ was installed in 1929.

St. Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Basilica began as a thatched hut in the 17th century by the locals. The temple was then known as 'Chapel of Kanikkai Madha'. Christian missionaries had to flee Mysore when Tipu Sultan ascended the throne.
In 1799 the British captured Srirangapatna from Tipu Sultan. French MEP priest Jean-Antoine Dubois came to Bangalore and started restoration of Catholicism. In 1803 Dubois built a chapel with a thatched roof on the present site. The structure was named 'Kaanike Mathe Devalaya', meaning 'Church of Our Lady of the Presentation'. In 1811 Dubois built a small chapel with a rectory for the priests. In 1813, he enlarged the chapel and renamed it 'the Church of Purification of Our Lady. The church was destroyed during the communal riots of 1832. The church was rebuilt to its present form in 1856-1882.
The stained glass windows were removed during World War II and were subsequently restored in 1947. A Novena (an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity) is held on the first nine days from 29 August to 7 September.

St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral

The first church of St. Francis Xavier was constructed in 1851 by French missionaries. In 1911, the foundation stone of the current building was laid. This church was inaugurated on 26 May 1932.
Two new domes of the facade were inaugurated in 2009. The cathedral's large compound has three schools: St. Aloysius', St. Anthony's and St. Rock's. There is also a Shrine dedicated to St. Anthony.

How to go: It is located about 1.15 km from St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral towards southeast. Trinity Subway station is the nearest station from the lake about 500 meters from the south end of the lake.

Sri Someshwara Swami devalaya

Hindu Temple

Also known as Halasuru Someshwara Temple.
According to one source, Kempe Gowda (27 June 1510 – 1569), while on a hunting trip far from his capital. Exhausted, he rested under a tree and fell asleep. The local deity Someshwara appeared to him in a dream and ordered a temple to be built in his honor using the buried treasure. Kempe Gowda found the treasure and completed the temple.
Another account attributes the temple to the Chola dynasty which was later renovated by Yelahanka Nada Prabhus.
How to go: It is located about 450 meters from the southend of Ulsoor Lake towards southeast and about 230 meters from Halasuru Subway station towards southwest.
