Quarantine Station

The Quarantine Station was established to regulate the risk of disease of crew of merchant shipping from the 1830s. The initial quarantine practice was applied on the vessel 'Lady Macnaghten' in 1837 and made huge delay. For that reason, heavy demurrage claimed for that delay. After that, the sick were removed from their ship and housed ashore. As a result the ship was returned to the owner with the minimum delay. So, permanent accommodation and stores buildings were start to build at the Quarantine Station at North Head.
The rate of mortality were reduced. Also reduces the number of quarantine-ships. Only one ship was quarantined in 1842-1848.
But accommostions were not increased. In 1853, A ship named 'Beejapore' arrived , with over one thousand passengers. At that time, the Quarantine Station could accommodate 150 persons. Fifty-five people died during the voyage, and a further sixty two died at the Quarantine Station, from the illnesses of measles, scarlet fever and typhus fever. The resulting changes to the station.
Seperate women barracks and 2 new buildings were built in the Healthy Ground. Burial ground were made far from the Healthy-Ground. Eight quarters were also built for the Superintendent.
During the quarantine of the ship 'Baroda' in 1873, the first class passengers had to do their own washing. A new group of First Class accommodation buildings were built in the Health-Ground.
Commonwealth took over responsibility for the Quarantine Service after 1909. After the creation of the Health Department in 1921, Quarantine Stations were built in the various states.
