Frederiksberg Palace

As Crown Prince, Frederick IV was fascinated by Italian architectures. He asked his father, Christian V, for permission to build a summer palace. He then built a one-story summer residence. The palace and Frederiksberg Gardens were completed in 1703. In 1709 it was converted into a three-story H-shaped building. A chapel was built and inaugurated on 31 March 1710. Frederick IV was received the Russian czar Peter the Great at Frederiksberg Palace in 1716. The final expansion and wings were built from 1733 to 1738. Frederiksberg Gardens was redesigned as an English landscape garden from 1795 to 1804. His son, Frederick VI (28 January 1768 – 3 December 1839), lived there both as crown prince and as king. After the death of his wife, Queen Marie at the palace in March 1852, the building lay empty and fell into disrepair.

Storm P. Museum

The building was constructed in the mid-1880s as Frederiksberg's first police station.
The local police force left the building in 1919. In the mid-1920s, the building became home to Frederiksberg Funeral Services. The gable was removed and the walls were painted in the current yellow color. The Storm P Museum took over the building in 1977.

Jens Olsen's World Clock

The clock was designed and calculated by Jens Olsen (1872–1945) between 1934 and 1936. But the actual production of the clock took place from 1943 until 1955. The clock was started on 15 December 1955.

Copenhagen Cathedral

Also called the Church of Our Lady was first constructed as Collegiate Church of St. Mary in 1187-1209. It was destroyed by fire in 1314. It was rebuilt and completed in 1388. It was again damaged by lightning in 1573 and 1585 and was rebuilt by 1609.
Due to a four-day long conflict in October 1728, which destroyed one-third of the city. The church was then completely destroyed. A decade later, the church was rebuilt with the same plan as the medieval church.
In September 1807, the cathedral was destroyed during the Copenhagen bombing during the Napoleonic Wars. The church was built in a Neo-classical style. The foundation stone was laid in 1817 and the work was completed by 1829. Our Lady Church was designated a Denmark's National Cathedral in 1924.

The Round Tower

The foundation stone was laid on 7 July 1637. The tower was finally completed in 1642. The church was completed in 1657 and the library in 1657.
There are spiral ramps instead of stairs to reach the Tower top Observatory.

Rosenborg Castle

The castle was originally built in 1606. It has been expanded several times, finally into its present condition by the year 1624. The castle was used by Danish regents as a royal residence until around 1710.

Construction of the Nyboder began in 1631 as Naval barracks.
Nyboder still houses enlisted personnel of the Danish Navy, Army and Air Force but housing is open to civilian applicants and has not been a priority for military personnel since 2006.

St. Paul's Church

It was constructed in 1872-1877 and opened on 15 February 1877.

Frederik's Church
Church
The church was designed in 1740. The foundation stone was set on October 31, 1749. The church was left incomplete and, stood as a ruin for nearly 150 years.
The ruins of the uncompleted church and the church square was sold to Carl Frederik Tietgen in 1874. Tietgen financed its construction. The church was opened to the public on August 19, 1894.

Amalienborg
Palaces
It is the home of the Danish royal family. It consists of four palaces around an octagonal courtyard.
Sophie Amalienborg which was built in 1669-1673. It burnt down on 19 April 1689 in a fire.
The second Amalienborg was built by Frederick IV at the beginning of his reign (25 August 1699 – 12 October 1730). The project consisted of four identical mansions, placed around an octagonal square.
Building of the palaces were started in 1750 and completed in 1760. Palaces are
* Christian VII's Palace (originally known as Moltke's Palace).
* Christian VIII's Palace (originally known as Levetzau's Palace).
* Frederick VIII's Palace (originally known as Brockdorff's Palace)

There is a statue of King Frederik V on the center of the courtyart. It was built in 1753-1771.
Amalienborg is guarded day and night by Royal Life Guards. The guard march from Rosenborg Castle at 11:30 AM daily through the streets of Copenhagen and execute the changing of the guard in front of Amalienborg at noon.
Amaliehaven: Also called Amalie Garden is located east end of Amalienborg near the waterfront was established in 1983.

Kastellet

The area contains a number of buildings, including the Citadel Church as well as a windmill.
King Christian IV of Denmark began construction of the Kastellet in 1626 with the building of St. Anne's Redoubt to protect the entrance to the port. He also built a blockhouse on the other side of the canal between Zealand and Amager. The Citadel has two gates, the King's Gate on the south and the Norway Gate on the north, both of which have been part of Ruise's main fort since 1663. In 1874 a clock and two bells were placed inside the King's Gate. The gates were demolished in the late 19th century.
The Kastelskirken or Citadel Church was built in 1703–1704. A forge was built on Falster's counter guard in 1709. Reconstructed in 1888, it now serves as a residence for military personnel. Two powder houses which were built in 1712. On the King's Bastion, in the southwestern corner of Kastellet, a windmill was built in 1718, which was destroyed by a storm. The present windmill was built in 1847. The Commander's House of Kastellet was built in 1725. A prison complex was built in 1725 on the rear side of the church.
The Central Guard House was built from 1873 to 1874 with an attached jailhouse is located just inside the King's Gate.
During the German invasion of Denmark on April 9, 1940, German troops landing at a nearby port occupied the fort without resistance. Kastellet was renovated 1989-1999.
The Citadel is still an active military area but also serving as a public park as well as a cultural-historical monument. There are museums inside the premises. There is a changing of the guard ceremony at 12 PM every day at the Central Guard House.

Polar bear with cubs
Sculpture
The sculpture was made in Paris. It first appeared at the Salon in 1929 and won a gold medal. It was purchased in 1937 and gifted to the Port Authority of Copenhagen. It was unveiled here in 1939.

Trekroner Fort
Fort
Trekroner Fort is located at one of three artificial islands that were created to defend the entrance to Copenhagen's harbor.
The fort was built in 1713 a few hundred meters north of the present location. In 1713, three old ships sank. The name of one of the ships was Trekroner. The fort is named after the ship.
Construction of the present fort began in 1787. The fort was an important part of the Danish defense during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, and during the British invasion of Copenhagen in 1807.
In 1934 it was sold to Copenhagen Port Services. It was used as a German barracks during the German occupation of Denmark. After the war it was used as a prison for German officers. It was empty until 1984, when it was opened to the public.

Scenic area was built on both sides of the canal. Townhouses of the 17th and early 18th centuries were renovated in bright colors. These are now bars, cafes and restaurants.

Memorial Anchor

A wooden cross was erected at the site in 1945 in memory of civilian sailors who died during the 1939-1945 war. In 1948, it was replaced by a cross in marble. On 29 August 1951, the marble cross was replaced by the current anchor.
How to go: It is located northwest end of Nyhavn canal.
Charlottenborg Palace

The site was donated by King Christian V to his half brother Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve on 22 March 1669. Gyldenløve built his new mansion from 1672 to 1683. He sold the mansion to the dowager queen Charlotte Amalie in 1700. The palace was renamed Charlottenborg Palace.
In 1701, the old Academy of Arts began in the Palace and was finally inaugurated in the Palace on March 31, 1754. In 1714, when the Queen Dowager died, the place was passed to King Christian VI. He renovated the palace in 1736-1737. A small theater was constructed and used for various concerts, operas. The Palace Garden contained the Botanical Garden between 1778 - 1872. In 1787, the ownership of the Palace was transferred to The Royal Danish Academy of Art.

Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art
Art Center
Nikolaj Kunsthal (St. Nicholas Church) was was built in the early 1200s. The date is unknown but was first recorded in 1261. It is the third oldest church in Copenhagen. The elections of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Copenhagen were held in the Church from 1479 to 1487. The current tower was completed in 1591.
The spire broke during a storm in 1628, destroying the nave. It was rebuilt and a larger and lighter nave was built. A new spire was erected at the top of the tower in 1669.
During the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1795, the church was fully destroyed. Only the strong tower remains standing in the present day.
In 1805 the parish of St. Nicholas was abolished. The fire brigade take over the tower in 1822. They installed fireguards at the top and a fire station at the bottom. A clock was installed at the top of the tower in 1868.
In 1909 a new spire was donated. The current building, which opened in 1912. In 1917 a shorter version new nave was donated. The Copenhagen Central Library moved to the new building in 1922 and continued until 1957. Then the Salvation Army’s helpline moved into the south chapel and stayed until 1972. In 1958 The Royal Danish Naval Museum moved in and lived on the first floor until 1979. In 1957 the large hall was rented by Knud Petersen and opened his art library. In 1981 Copenhagen Council took over the administration of the building. The tower and first floor are used for exhibitions.
On 1st April 2006, the name of 'Nikolaj Exhibition Hall' was changed to 'Nikolaj – Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center'. In 2011, the name was changed from 'Nikolaj – Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center' to 'Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center'.

Christiansborg Palace
Palace
The first castle on the site was Absalon's Castle, built in 1167 by the bishop Absalon.
After Absalom's death in 1201, the castle passed to Bishop of Roskilde. The castle was frequently occupied and plundered during the years 1249 to 1259.
The castle was demolished in 1369 by order of King Valdemar IV. Towards the end of this century, a new palace, Copenhagen Castle, was built on the site.
The Copenhagen Castle was demolished in 1731 by King Christian VI for architectural problems. King Christian VI began construction of the first Christianborg Palace on the site in 1733. Most of the palace complex was completed in 1745 and was the largest palace in Northern Europe at the time. The palace and church were destroyed in a fire in 1794.
The royal family lived in temporary accommodation in the Amalienborg Palace. Construction of the second Christianborgh began in 1803. The palace was completed in 1828. King Frederick VI did not live there and he only used the palace for entertainment. King Frederick VII was the only king who lived in the palace between 1852-1863. The second Christiansborg was burned in 1884. The ruins remain for the next 23 years.
The third and present Christianborg Palace was built from 1907-1928. The second Christianborg Palace was preserved in the north facing Prince George's Yard.
The ruins of Absalon's Castle and Copenhagen Castle were excavated in the early 20th century and can be seen today in the underground excavations under the present palace.

Danish War Museum

The building which houses The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum, is built in 1604 by Christian IV and is still one of the biggest of its kind in the world.

The Royal Library
Library
It is one of the 10 largest libraries in the world according to number of items. The library was founded in 1648 by King Frederik III. It was opened to the public in 1793. In 1989, it was merged with the Copenhagen University Library, which was founded in 1482. In 2005, it was merged with the Danish National Library for Science and Medicine.
The old building of the Slotsholmen site was built in 1906. A new building adjacent to the old one was built in 1999 at Slotsholmen, known as the Black Diamond. Named for its outside cover of black marble and glass.
Visiting Time: Monday to Saturday - 9 AM to 7 PM. Sunday remains closed.

Garden of the Royal Library

Børsen
Building
Børsen was planned by Christian IV. Construction of the building began in 1620 and was completed in 1640. Christian IV sold the building to the merchant Jacob Madsen in 1647. Frederick III later reacquired the building from Madsen's widow.
The interior of the building was renovated in 1855. Frederick VII sold the building to Grosserer-Societetet in 1857.
The building now serves as headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce. It is not open to the public.
How to go: It is located northeast side of the Royal Library on Slotsholmen island.

Church of Our Saviour
Church
A temporary church was inaugurated in 1639. The present church began in 1682 and was completed in 1695.
The organ was built from 1698-1700 and is mounted on the wall with the support of two elephants. The organ has more than 4000 pipes. The last rebuilding of the organ was in 1965, reusing older pipe work.
The carillon on the tower was built in 1928. It plays melodies every hour from 8 AM to midnight. It was rebuilt in 1980. It consists of 48 bronze carillon bells that have a musical range of 4 octaves which making it the largest carillon in Northern Europe.
How to go: It is located about 600 meters from Børsen towards south at Sankt Annæ Gade 29.

The center is located in an old maritime warehouse from 1767.

Copenhagen Opera House
Opera House
It is the national opera house of Denmark, and one of the most modern opera houses in the world. Construction began in June 2001 and was completed on October 1, 2004. It opened on January 15, 2005.
