District in India

Kangra is a district in Himachal Pradesh state in India. Historically it was known as Nagarkot.

Kangra district is bounded by Chamba to the north, Lahul and Spiti to the northeast, Kullu to the east, Mandi to the southeast, and Hamirpur and Una to the south. Punjab state on the southwest, and Jammu and Kashmir on the northwest.

The main tourist spot of Kangra is Mcleodganj, Dharamshala.



How to reach Kangra

By Air: You can go to by air to Gaggal Airport, Dharamsala, Kangra (IATA Code - DHM) from any airport in India.

By Train: You have to to go Pathankot rail station from Delhi, Then by local bus to Mcleodganj, Dharamshala.
By Road: From Delhi There are available bus runs to different places at Kangra.

Delhi-Baijnath: normal bus starts at 22:00 PM and reaches at 9:15 AM. Fare 310 Rs.
Delhi-Dharamshala: normal bus starts at 17:31 PM  and reaches at 4:55 AM. Fare 305 Rs.
Delhi-Dharamshala: Semi Deluxe bus starts at 18:50 PM and reaches at 6:00 AM. Fare 325 Rs.
Delhi-Dharamshala: AC Tata bus starts at 20:16 PM and reaches at 7:30 AM. Fare 620 Rs.
Delhi-Dharamshala: AC Volvo bus starts at 20:50 PM and reaches at 7:30 AM. Fare 802 Rs.

Here I'm describing all the possible beautiful places in Kangra. According to your taste and time, you can set your destination. Here I'm describing from Baijnath Village.

Day-1: Baijnath

The very famous 13th-century temple of Lord Shiva.
How to go: Baijnath is about 51 kilometers from Kangra and near from Bus stand (Delhi - Baijnath Bus station).

Palpung Monastery

How to go: Palpung Monastery is 5 km away from Baijnath temple.

Taragarh Palace

Heritage Hotel

Taragarh Palace is a former royal residence built in 1937. This is now an elegant heritage hotel.
How to go: It is situated 5 km from Tashijong Monastery and 9 km from Baijnath Temple.
From Baijnath come to Lohar Taraghad Bus Stop by bus.

How to go: About 8 km away from Chamunda Devi Mandir towards Dharamsala.

Norbulingka Institute

Buddhist Institute

Norbulingka Institute preserve Tibetan arts and culture.
Visitors can see Tibetan artisans and their apprentices as they practice the ancient Buddhist art forms of statue-making, thangka painting, thangka applique, as well as the decorative arts of woodcarving, wood painting, tailoring, and weaving.

visitors also can visit their temple, Deden Tsuklagkhang.
The Losel Doll Museum houses a collection of over 150 dolls dressed in traditional costumes from various regions of Tibet.
There is a shop inside the premises, visitor can buy their products created within their workshops.
There is a Hummingbird Café, open year-round from 7am to 9pm. It serves all vegetarian international cuisine, Tibetan thukpa, cheese pizza, fresh-baked pita bread, variety of seasonal juices, special coffee drinks, homemade cakes etc.
In the premises they have beautiful rooms to stay.
Food also available.
Buffet breakfast cost 525 Rs per person, Breakfast + Lunch / Dinner for veg cost 1103 Rs per person and non-veg cost 1155 Rs per person.

Day-3: Kangra Town

Maharana Pratap Sagar

Lake was created in 1975.


Those who wants to avoid Kareri Lake, straight go to Mcleodganj. I’m describing later after Kareri Lake.

Now those who wants to visit Kareri Lake alone without guide, go to Dharamshala. From Dharamshala you can hire Taxi to Kareri Village with 1000-1200 Rs. This is the best option for group. Because you don’t have to walk and to catch the next day bus, you have to stay at hotel. So you can save hotel cost and also save one day one night time. So this is the best option to go directly to Kareri Village by taxi.

Those who are solo budget traveler try to find a shared taxi from Dharamsala. If not found then wait 1 night at hotel. There are local buses from Dharamshala to Ghera village (4,350 feet) starting at 8 AM every morning. So stay night Dharamsala near bus stop.


Day-4: Kareri Village

How to go: Go to Ghera from Dharamshala by bus at 8 AM. From Ghera you have to hike to Kareri village. It takes 2-3 hours. The trek is very easy and many villagers using it every day. So you are not alone.
You may choose to stay at the Forest Rest House situated about 200 feet above the Kareri village or you can stay at villager’s house. Ask around at the village for a room and you can get one for as cheap as 100-150 Rs a night including two meals and tea.


Day-5: Kareri Lake

Go uphill inside the village crossing small houses and cattle sheds. There is a stair-way. walk till you reach a man-made bridge and cross it. Keep going about an hour till you see fields below to your left.
From this point on, the trek descends for 30-45 minutes to a cement bridge to cross the Nyund River. After crossing the bridge, take left and walk till Naholi Village. Ask locals for directions. As soon as the open fields end, you will find a man-made water reservoir to your right. Keep going 30 minutes, it turns into a 10 feet wide path. Few minutes later, U-turn to the right and slopes downhill. After 30 minutes walk, you will reach a ‘T-point’, Take right and uphill for 2 hours.
The river at your left. From here the Nyund River will stays by your side all along the trek to the lake. Follows the river for an hour till you see bridge to cross the river. The pathway is straight forward. You will reach a small shop (from June to September) 4 Kms before Kareri Lake. You will get snacks and beverages here.
After 90 minutes from the shop, you will see shepherd hut. Keep going 10 minutes you will find another much larger shepherd hut. More 15 minute steep uphill to the lush open grasslands surrounding the lake. A small temple dedicated to Shiva besides the lake.
Stay few hours and back to the Kareri Village. Stay at night or if you have time you can go to Ghera to stay there.


There is a trek from Kareri Village to Mcleodganj and Triund hill via Guna Devi Temple. If you are not trekker than leave it, save your energy and go by bus.


Day-5: Triund Hill

The first bus from Ghera starts at 7.30 AM followed by one at 8.30 AM and the last one at 9.30 AM.
Go to Mcleodganj/Bhangsu from Dharamsala. Bhagsu is 1 km away and can be easily covered on foot. In Bhagsu you'll be able to find better and more economical places to stay. There you will find cafe. Amazing food at a cheap price!  But without staying Mcleodganj/Bhangsu, direct go to Triund Hill.

Triund Hill

Nice views of the Bhagsu valley and snow-clad mountains.
How to go: Hike to Triund. It's about 7 kms trek from Bhagsu and bit tiring but can be covered in 4-5 hours.
Night stay at Triund: Here you can ask one of the 3 shopkeepers there for a tent. It should cost you about 600 Rs per tent per night. You'll get food there but little expensive.


Day-6: ILaka

Ilaka

Early in the morning hike to Ilaka which is another 5 Km up and you'll be able to reach the Snow Mountains. You can spend the night here. You will find another shop keeper at Ilaka renting tents for Rs. 800/tent/night. Stay and feel the beauty.


Day-7: Mcleodganj
Early in the morning come back to Mcleodganj and visit

Now stay at night and back to your home on the next day. Or you can visit Nearest next district of Himachal Pradesh is Chamba, another beautiful place. There are buses between Mcleodganj to Dalhousie, Chamba. Fare 150-160 Rs. The journey takes about 4.5 hours.
