Kristineberg Palace

Kristineberg was built in 1750 for Roland Schröder (1713–1773). It was bought by the Swedish Freemasonry in 1864. Stockholm City bought the land in 1921. Now part of the former palace is used as Kristinebergsskolan primary school.

Sodermalm means Southern Island is a district and island in central Stockholm.

Heleneborg

Estate

Jonas Osterling bought the property in 1669 and used it as a Swedish tobacco manufacturing company. Osterling went bankrupt and he died in 1691. This estate was burnt down in 1701.
Olof Forsberg bought the property in 1739 and produced white clay pipes until 1759. Adolph Christiernin bought the property in 1759 and continued to produce clay pipe until 1766. He named the property Heleneborg after his wife, Helena Catharina Malmin. Due to poverty, he had to leave Heleneborg in 1767.
W.N. Burmester bought  Heleneborg in the 1860s. His son Alfred Nobel and Alfred's brothers experimented with the safe handling of the explosive nitroglycerin. On September 3, 1864, a large explosion ripped through the courtyard, killing the younger brother, Emil Oscar Nobel.
Captain Johan Adolf Berg bought the estate In 1874 and renovated it to its present condition. After his death, his widow sold the property in 1906. The apartments were built on the property, only the main building still stands.

Maria Magdalena

Church

The church was built in the 1350s during the reign of King Magnus Eriksson. It was destroyed by the troops of Christian II of Denmark after 1527. King John III began construction of a new church on the site in 1588. After his death in 1592, construction was suspended until 1634.
The church was destroyed in a fire in 1759 with about 300 buildings in the neighborhood. The church was rebuilt in 1763, preserving most of the old design. The exterior yellow color was combined in 1986.

Day-4: Sodermalm Island

Katarina-Sofia

Area

Katarina-Sofia was a borough, named after the two parishes of Katarina and Sofia. It was merged with the borough of Maria-Gamla Stan to form the Sodermalm borough.
Katarina-Sofia was made up of the eastern half from north bridge to south bridge straight line of Södermalm island.

Stockholm City Museum building was completed in 1685. The museum is the largest municipal museum in Sweden.

Katarina Elevator

Lift

It is a passenger elevator that connects Slussen to the Sodermalm.

Karl Johansslussen

Sluice Gate

The lock is 75 metres long and 10 metres wide connecting Gamla Stan and Sodermalm Island. The original lift was built in 1881. The current was rebuilt in 1936.

The current Theater was inaugurated in 1859.

Katarina kyrka

Church

The original building was constructed 1656–1695 during the reign of king Charles X of Sweden. The church is named after Princess Catherine, mother of the king. The church was completely destroyed in a major fire in 1723 and rebuilt. It was again completely burned down by fire on May 17, 1990. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1995.
Visiting Time: Monday to Saturday - 11 AM to 5 PM and Sunday - 8:30 AM to 5 PM.
How to go: It is located about 200 meters from Mosebacke Square towards southeast at Högbergsgatan 13A.

It exhibits photography. Fotografiska is housed in a former customs house, which was built in 1906.

Gamla stan is the old town of Stockholm. Gamla stan consists mainly Stadsholmen island. Unofficially it also includes 3 smmal islands, surrounded by Stadsholmen island. They are Riddarholmen island (west side), Helgeandsholmen island (north side) and Stromsborg island (northwest side).

Marten Trotzigs Grand

About 80 meters northeast-southwest street is about 35 inches wide made the narrowest road in Stockholm.
How to go: The street starts from Vasterlånggatan street near Jarntorget square (south end) to headed northeast until Prästgatan street (north end) in Gamla stan.


German Church, Stockholm

King Charles VIII was elected in the guild's building in 1448. The building was converted into church in the 1580s. Hans Jakob Kristler enlarged the chapel in 1638-1642 to the present structure.

The Royal Palace

First a fortress with a core tower was built on this site in the 13th century. The fortress grew to a castle. But later it was modified. The northern row of the present palace was built in 1692. Earlier fortress was burned down by a fire on 7 May 1697. Construction of new palace was began in 1697 and Inaugurated on 7 December 1754 but completed in 1760.

Riddarholmen Church

The building was built in the 13th century as a greyfriars monastery. The monastery was closed and the building start to use as a Lutheran church in the 16th century. A spire was destroyed by a lightning strike on July 28, 1835 and was replaced with the present.

The opera building was built in 1775-1782 by king Gustav III (January 1746 – 29 March 1792). It was inaugurated on 30 September 1782.

St. Jacobs Kyrka

It is assume that the first chapel at this place was built around 1311. King John III ordered to build a church at this place in 1580. The church was built in 1588-1643. A fire destroyed the roof in 1723. A new central tower was inaugurated in 1739. The church restored in 1932–37 as present interior.

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

Prince Eugene of Sweden rented a house on the site for a short time in 1892. He bought the land 7 years later and built a new house in 1903-1904.
Prince Eugene studied as a painter in Paris. The prince died in 1949 and was buried near his home. The house was transformed into a museum of his own and other paintings.

Kaknastornet

TV Tower

155 meter high tower and 170 meters with antena was built in 1967. The tower was opened to the public but has now been permanently closed to the public since 2018 due to broadcast security reason.
How to go: It is located about 1.5 km from Oscars forsamling towards east at Morka Kroken 28-30.


Museum of Ethnography

Visiting Time: Wednesday to Sunday - 11 AM to 5 PM.
Entry Fee: Free.
How to go: It is located about 300 meters from Kaknastornet TV Tower towards southwest at Djurgårdsbrunnsvägen 34.


Museum of Technology

Visiting Time: 10 AM to 5 PM every day.
Entry Fee: 150 Kronor ($17.91).
Free Entry: Wednesday from 5 PM to 8 PM.
How to go: It is located west side of Museum of Ethnography at Museivagen 7.


Maritime Museum

Entry Fee: Free.
How to go: It is located west side of Museum of Technology at Djurgardsbrunnsvagen 24.



Day-15:

Drottninggatan

Street

About 1.6 km north-south pedestrian street. Drottninggatan means Queens Street.
How to go: South end of the street starts from bridge Riksbron at Norrstrom, in the district of Norrmalm. It headed to north to Observatorielunden in the district of Vasastaden.


S:ta Clara Kyrkas Vanner

Church

The Church of Saint Clare was founded on the site in 1280s. It was destroyed in 1527. The present church Construction was started in 1572 by king Johan III (December 1537 – 17 November 1592).
How to go: It is located about 100 meters east from Stockholm Central Station at Klara Östra kyrkogata 7-9.

How to go: It is located about 180 meters from Sergels torg towards northwest at Sergelgatan 29.


Stockholm Concert Hall

The building was built in 1926. The Nobel Prize and the Polar Music Prize ceremonies are held annually. Many pop and rock concerts are held at the Stockholm Concert Hall.
How to go: It is located northwest side of Hotorgshallen market at Hotorget 8.


Strindberg Museum

Entry Fee: 75 Kronor ($8.96) for adult. 50 Kronor ($5.97) for students, senior and unemployed. Free for age below 19.
How to go: It is located about 580 meters from Stockholm Concert Hall towards northwest through Drottninggatan street at Drottninggatan 85.


Observatorielunden

Park

The park on the Observatoriekullen hill. There is a Old Stockholm Observatory, which was built in 1753. It is located on the top of the hill. Stockholm Public Library and the Stockholm School of Economics' main building lie at its edges. There is a bronze sculpture Kentauren, which was built in 1936 on the northeastern corner of the hill.
The Old Stockholm Observatory also has a meteorological station where the temperature is still measured daily since 1756. It is the oldest continuous record of temperature in the world.
How to go: The park is located about 780 meters from Stockholm Concert Hall towards northwest or the north end of Drottninggatan Street.


Stockholm Public Library

Library

Construction began in 1924 and completed in 1928. Officially opened on 31 March 1928.
How to go: It is located north end of Observatorielunden park.


Norra Tornen

Towers

North Towers is a pair of high-rise apartment buildings. East one is 125 meter tall and consisting 36 floors and west one is 110 meters consisting 33 floors was opened in 2018.
How to go: It is located 1.5 km from Stockholm Public Library towards northwest at Torsplan 8.



Vasaparken, Stockholm

Park

How to go: It is located about 730 meters from North Towers towards southeast at Dalagatan 11C.

How to go: It is located about 3.1 km from Observatorielunden towards north at Frescativägen 40.


Bergianska tradgården

Visiting Time: Tuesday to Friday - 11 AM to 4 PM. Saturday to Monday remains closed.
Entry Fee: 80 Kronor ($9.55) for adult. Free for child age 0-17.
How to go: It is located northwest side of Museum of Natural History at Gustafsborgsvägen 4.


Brunnsviken

Lake

3.5 km by 0.4–0.5 km lake is located on the boundary between Solna Municipality and Stockholm Municipality.
How to go: It is located west side of Bergianska tradgarden.


Haga Palace

Palace

Previously known as Queen's Pavilion. Construction started in May 1802 by King Gustav IV Adolf. The interior was finished at the end of 1805. From the 1820s the palace was used as a summer house for Crown Prince Oscar. In the 1860 the palace was renovated for Prince August (youngest son of King Oscar I) and his wife Princess Therese. They lived at this palace until princess Theresa's death in 1914.
Newly wedded couple Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla relocated there in 1932. The Princesses Margaretha, Birgitta, Desiree and Christina and Prince Carl Gustaf, were all born there. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel moved to the palace on 15th November, 2010.
How to go: It is located in Stockholm and Solna municipality. West bank of Brunnsviken lake at Hagaparken.
