Debendranath Tagore (Father of Rabindranath Tagore) had permanent leased 20 acres of land, with two chhatim (Alstonia scholaris) trees, from the land lord of Raipur in 1863. He built a guest house there and named it Shantiniketan. Rabindranath Tagore first visited Shantiniketan on 27 January, 1878. Debendranath Tagore established an ashram at Shantiniketan. Later Rabindranath Tagore established a school inside the ashram in 1901. Rabindranath Tagore received Nobel Prize in 1913. Then he started a college there from the Nobel Prize money on 23 December 1921. The college was granted full university status in May 1951. Rabindranath Tagore called it Visva-Bharati.
So Visva-Bharati became a popular visiting place to the Rabindranath fans. You can visit Ashram, Poush Mela on 7th day of Bangla Poush month, Amar Kutir, Rabindra Bhaban Museum, Chattimtala, Khoai Mela on Saturday starts from 4 AM, Prayer Hall (Bangla: Upashona Ghor), Kola Bhaban, Uttaryan complex, China Bhavan, Sangeet Bhaban, Nippon Bhaban.
Visiting Time: Everyday 9 AM to 5 PM. Wednesday Viswa Bharati remains close.
How to go: Go to Howrah Station by bus. Then by train Howrah to Bolpur in Birbhum district. Station is 53 km away from Shantiniketan.
