Park

The Centre Pompidou

Architecture

It was designed in the style of high-tech architecture. It is a Public Information Library and the largest museum for modern art in Europe.
How to go: It is about 1.2 km from Place de la Republique towards south.


Hotel de Ville

City Hall

Since 1357, the City of Paris's administration has been located here. In 1533, King Francis I decided to build city hall. But the building work was not finished until 1628 during the reign of Louis XIII. In 1835, two wings were added to the main building and were linked to the facade by a gallery.
This building played a key role during the Franco-Prussian War. On October 9, the revolutionaries entered the building and arrested some members of the National Defense Government. The existing government escaped with a tunnel built in 1807, which still links Hotel de Ville to the nearest barracks. During the end of the war, the Communards set fire to the Hotel de Ville, along with other government buildings, and destroyed the building and almost all the city's archives.
The City Hall was rebuilt from 1873 to 1892 (19 years).

Eiffel Tower

The foundations started on 28 January 1887. The main structural was completed at the end of March 1889. The tower is 324 metres or 1,063 feet tall. The tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world.
The tower has three levels for visitors. 1st Level is on 57 meters height from ground. 2nd level is on 116 meters height from ground and top level is on 276 meters height from ground. There is a lift and staircase facilities.

Les Invalides, formally was the National Residence of the Invalids. Now it containing museums and monuments of the military history of France, a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans. There is a Dome which also known as tomb of Napoleon.

After the death of Henry IV in 1610, his wife, Marie de' Medici, mother of King Louis XIII, decided to build a new palace for himself. The Palace was built between 1615–1645.
There is a beautiful garden called Luxembourg Gardens. There is a children's area, carousel & puppet theatre.
Entry Fee: free to enter the gardens. but there is a fee to enter the children's area. 2.50 euros per child and 1.50 for adults.
How to go: The nearest metro station is Senat is 362 meters away, Theatre De L'Odeon is 408 meters away, Mairie Du Ve - Pantheon is 483 meters away. About 2.2 km from Rodin Museum towards east.

Pantheon

Latin Quarter

In 508, Clovis, King of the Franks, constructed a church. Later he and his wife were buried in 511 and 545. The church was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Later it was rededicated to Saint Genevieve.
In 1744, King Louis XV promised that he would set up the church here when he recovered from his illness. He was healed, but the foundations were laid in 1758 and was finally completed in 1790.
How to go: It is about 500 meters from Luxembourg Palace towards east through road Rue Soufflot.

Day-8:

Palace of Versailles

It was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, The palace is now UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site was owned by the Gondi family. King Henry IV used to go for hunting at this village. His son Louis XIII, came his hunting trip there in 1607. Later he bought some land, and in 1623-24 built a modest two-story hunting lodge on the site. After that he purchased the surrounding territory from the Gondi family. Then he replaced the hunting lodge with a chateau of brick and stone.
Louis XIV first visited the chateau on a hunting trip in 1651 at the age of twelve. Later in 1661, he added two wings, one for servants quarters and kitchens, the other for stables. In 1668 he added three new wings built of stone, known as the envelope, restructured the garden into the most magnificent gardens in Europe. In 1670, added a new pavilion, called the Trianon, for the King's relaxation in the hot summers.
Louis XIV died in 1715 and the young new King, Louis XV was just five years old. Government were moved from Versailles to Paris. In 1722, when the King came of age, he moved his residence and the government back to Versailles and made few changes to the exteriors of Versailles.
Louis XVI couldn't made the major changes due to financial problem. In 1789, due to revolution in Paris, King and Royal family and the members of the National Assembly were bound to move to Paris.
In 1792, the new revolutionary government, ordered the transfer of all the paintings and sculptures from the Palace to the Louvre and in 1793, they ordered all of the royal property in the Palace to be sold at auction.
When Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of the French in 1804 and marriage with Marie-Louise in 1810, then He had restored and rebuilt only the Grand Trianon as a springtime home for himself and his family.
In 1815, Louis XVIII, the younger brother of Louis XVI, became King. He ordered the restoration of the royal apartments of Versailles, where he had been born. But failed due to cost was too high.
After the French Revolution, in 1833, a new king, Louis-Philippe began the creation of a Museum in the south wing of the Palace and inaugurated on 30 June 1837. He made some changes of the palace. The museum's project was closed when Louis Philip was ousted in 1948.
Emperor Napoleon III used the Palace during grand ceremonies as stage, such as he hosted for Queen Victoria in the Royal Opera of Versailles on August 25, 1855.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, part of the Palace was turned into a military hospital by German army.
After 1892 the restoration of the palace was started.

Entry Fee: Outside Garden for pedestrian is free. 15 euros for only palace and 18 euros for anywhere in Versailles. During Musical Fountains and Gardens shows (weekend from 1st April to 31th October), it costs €25. Free for student age 18-25 (student card needed). free on the first Sunday of every month from November to March. Go early to avoid huge crowd.
How to go:  It is located in the department of Yvelines, in the region of Ile-de-France. From nearest metro station in paris, return ticket cost is 7 euros. 2 tickets will provide. 1 for go and another for return.

Marie-Antoinette's Estate

The estate consists of: Petit Trianon, Queen’s theater, Chapel, French Pavillion, Grand Trianon.
The Trianon Palaces: In 1663 and 1665, Louis XIV purchased Trianon, outside of Versailles. porcelain pavilion construction began in 1670 and was finished in 1672. Louis XIV ordered its demolition in 1686 and replaced it by a larger residence. Construction begun in June 1687, finished in January 1688 and inaugurated by Louis XIV in the summer of 1688.
Entry Fee: 10 euros.
How to go: About 1.5 km from Palace of Versailles towards northwest.

Chateau de Chantilly

There are two attached buildings inside the premises. The first mansion, Grand Chateau was built between 1528 and 1531 for Anne de Montmorency which was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s. The Petit Chateau was also built for him, around 1560.

Visiting Time: Friday to Sunday - 10 AM to 6 PM. Last entry 5 PM. Other days remains closed.
Entry Fee: 16 euros for adult (from 23 September to 17 October). 18 euros for adult on site and online on October 18, 19 and 20.
How to go: Domaine de Chantilly is 20 minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport and 40 km from Paris center. From Paris, Go to Gare du Nord station. Buy a train (also called TER) ticket. 10 euros for one way. You also can buy package (return ticket+ entry to the Domaine de Chantilly, the park and the stables. Cost 25 euros for age over 12 years old, 1 euro for age under 12 years old. Train will reach at Chantilly-Gouvieux station. From there you can walk about 2 km towards east through road 'Avenue de la Pllaine des Aigles. Free bus (DUC-Desserte Urbaine Cantilienne) also runs from Chantilly-Gouvieux train station.

Chateau de Fontainebleau

Chateau de Fontainebleau in one of the largest French royal chateaux. It became a national museum in 1927 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
It became a favorite residence and hunting lodge of the Kings of France during 1137. Day by day it was modified by various kings.


Inside the Premises:
Gallery of Francis I:  It was originally constructed in 1528 as a passageway between the apartments of the King.
Ballroom: The ballroom was originally begun as an open passageway by Francis I.
St. Saturnin's Chapel: St. Saturnin's Chapel is located behind the ballroom. It was originally built in the 12th century, but was destroyed and rebuilt under Francis I.
Room of the Guards: A room for the guards is located next to the royal bedchambers. It was built during the reign of Charles IX.
Stairway of the King: The stairway of the King was installed in 1748 and 1749.
Queen's Bedroom: All of the Queens of France from Marie de Medici to the Empress Eugenie, slept in the bedchamber of the Queen.
Boudoir of Marie-Antoinette: The boudoir is located next to the Queen's bedroom. It created for Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1786.
Bedroom of the King: It was the former bedroom of the Kings of France from Henry IV to Louis XVI. In 1808 Napoleon decided to install his throne here.
Council Chamber: Kings and Emperors met their closest advisors here.
Apartment of the Pope and of the Queen-Mothers: The apartment of the Pope.
Gallery of Diana: The Gallery of Diana is a 242.4 feet long corridor now lined with bookcases. It was created by Henry IV at the beginning of the 17th century.
Apartments of Napoleon: It was built in 1786 for Louis XVI, next to the Gallery of Francis I.
Theatre: Theatre was built in the Belle-Cheminée wing the reign of Louis XV.
Chinese Museum: It is located on the ground floor of the Gros Pavillon close to the pond.
Chapel of the Trinity: The Chapel of the Trinity was built at the end of the reign of Francis I.
Gardens and the Park: From the time of Francis I, the palace was surrounded by formal gardens.
Garden of Diana: The Garden of Diana was created during the reign of Henry IV.
Pond: The large pond located next to the palace. It was made during the reign of Henry IV.
The English Garden: It was made during the reign of Henry IV. In one part of the garden, known as the garden of pines.
Garden and Canal: On the other side of the chateau, Henry IV created a large formal garden and a grand canal.
Museum of Napoleon I: The Museum of Napoleon I was created in 1986. It is in the wing on the right side of the Court of Honor.


Visiting Time: Wednesday to Monday - 9.30 AM to 5 PM. Tuesday remains closed.
Entry Fee: 12 euros. Admission to the Chateau de Fontainebleau is free on the first Sunday of each month (except on July and August).
How to go: It is located 55 kilometres southeast of the center of Paris. From Gare de Lyon station in Paris, train leaves for Fontainebleau. Day pass of train is cost 15 euros. It is cheaper than round trip.
