Strawberry Train

Train

El Tren de la Fresa runs from Madrid and Aranjuez on the second railway line in Spain, built in 1851 to connect Madrid to Aranjuez, a town that was a spring and autumn retreat for the royal family. It named Strawberry Train because of the strawberry fields it passed en route.
Visiting Time: Late April or early May to late June or early July. Mid-September to mid-October.
Departure: 9.50 AM from Madrid Railway Museum and 5.57 PM from Aranjuez. It takes about 55 minutes to reach.
Fare: Return ticket - 30 euros ($35.38) for adult and 15 euros ($17.69) for child age above 4. The price also include a guided tour of the royal palace at Aranjuez + Falúas Reales (Royal Barges) Museum + half-price admission to the bullfighting museum.

Royal Palace of Madrid

The palace was built by Muhammad I, Umayyad Emir in 860-880 AD. Henry III of Castile (1379-1406) added several towers. His son John II (1405-1454) used it as a royal residence.
Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) extended and renovated the castle in 1537. Philip III (1578-1621) added a long southern facade between 1610 and 1636.

Plaza de Oriente: Park was built in 1808 is located northeast side of the palace.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a town and municipality in Community of Madrid. About 47 km from Madrid is a World Heritage Site.

The construction of the building started on 23 April 1563 and completed in 1584 by king by King Philip II. El Escorial is the burial site for most of the Spanish kings. It is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fuencarral-El Pardo is one of the 21 districts in Madrid city.

El Pardo

Royal Palace

It was a hunting lodge of royal family. King Enrique III of Castile (4 October 1379 – 25 December 1406) ordered the building of the pavilion in 1406. Emperor Charles V (24 February 1500 – 21 September 1558) transformed into a palace in 1547. King Carlos III (20 January 1716 – 14 December 1788) renovated the building in the 18th century due to massive fire damage. It became the another residence of king Alfonso XII from 1874. He died in the palace in 1885.

In 1523, Charles I took possession of the area. In 1551, he established a botanical garden.
Philip II began construction of the first palace. It remained incomplete due to his death in 1598.
In 1700, Philip V, started the unfinished work. The palace was almost destroyed by fire in 1748.
King Ferdinand VI (23 September 1713 - 10 August 1759) rebuilt the palace.
Charles III (20 January 1716 – 14 December 1788) decorated the palace by paintings, hardwood furniture, etc.

Jardín del Rey: King's Garden. Small Garden is located souteast corner of the palace and west side of the Jardin del Parterre. It is made to see it from palace balconies

Jardin de Isabel II: Garden located east side of Mariblanca square.
Casa de Infantes: Civil building located south side of Jardin de Isabel II and southeast corner of Mariblanca square.
San Antonio de Padua: Ferdinand VI (23 September 1713 – 10 August 1759) built the chapel replacing earlier chapel by  Philip IV (8 April 1605 – 17 September 1665). It is located south side of Mariblanca square. Charles III (20 January 1716 – 14 December 1788) enlarged the chapel.
Museo de Falúas Reales: Museum is located about 950 meters from Fuente de Hércules y Anteo sculpture towards north.
Jardín del Príncipe: Largest garden in Aranjuez.
Estanque de los Chinescos: An artificial lake with a Chinese-style temple made of marble was built at the beginning of the 18th century. IT is located in Jardín del Príncipe.

Alcalá University

University

King Sancho IV of Castile was founded Studium Generale (almost like a university at that time called through Europe) in 1293.
In 1499, Cardinal Cisneros founded a university and named Complutense University.
Queen Maria Christina ordered The University to move to Madrid on 29 October 1836. It named then "Literary University" and renamed in 1851 as "the Central University of Madrid". The university renamed again its original name of "Complutense" in the 1970s.
Complutense University opened its Alcalá branch in 1975. Then re-founded as "the University of Alcalá de Henares". Later renamed again as "the University of Alcalá" in 1996.
It listed in the UNESCO the World Heritage site.

Roman Catholic Diocese of Alcalá de Henares

A diocese is the ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop in church governance.
On July 23, 1991, it was established as Diocese of Alcalá de Henare.

Archbishop's Palace of Alcalá de Henares

First it was built in 1209 by Archbishop Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada (1209-1247), as a temporary residence of the archbishops.
In 1308, the kings Ferdinand IV of Castile and James II of Aragon met here.
Courts were held in 1348.
Archbishop, Pedro Tenorio (1377-1399) rebuild the building and added a parade courtyard.
Archbishop, Juan Martínez Contreras (1423-1434) build the east wing.
On 20 January 1486, the first interview between the queen Isabella I of Castile (Queen of Castile from 1474 and Queen consort of Aragon from 1479) with Christopher Columbus (31 October 1451 – 20 May 1506) was held.
In 1524, Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca y Ulloa (1523-1534) constructed the west wing.
From 1991, it is the seat of Bishopric of Alcalá de Henares, and residence of the bishop.
