Stadtpark

Park

366 acres park is the second-largest park in the city after Altona Volkspark.
22 privately sponsored pieces of mostly stone and bronze public art are displayed throughout the park. Few of them are - Diana with dogs (1911), Diana on a doe (1910), Bathing Women (1926), Boy with fishes (1925), Gargoyle (1930), Dancing Girls (1935) etc.
The park's most popular landmark is the Hamburg Planetarium, a former water tower. At night, the tower is illuminated in different colors.

Hamburg State Opera

The first stone was laid on 18 May 1826 on the present location. and was completed in 1827 with 2,800 guest capacity. Both the exterior and interior of the structure were renovated in 1873, and again in 1891. Both the auditorium and its neighbouring buildings were destroyed during air raids by fire-bombing on the night of 2 August 1943. The current Staatsoper opened on 15 October 1955.

Mönckebergstraße

Street

800 meters east-west street. It is named after Johann Georg Mönckeberg, mayor of Hamburg in the 1890s and 1900s.
How to go: It starts from Hauptbahnhof at Steintorwall (east end) to the Rathaus subway station near Townhall at Rathausmarkt square (west end).


St. James' Church

Church

It was a small Roman Catholic chapel back in 1255. The chapel was replaced by a hall church with three naves between 1350 and 1400. Around one hundred years later, a fourth nave was added to the south side of the structure. The second tower was built in 1826/27 and it was destroyed with the rest of the church building in 1944, by bombing during World War II. It was rebuilt after 1963.
The organ was built in 1693 in the west gallery, with around 4,000 pipes, is the largest baroque organ in Northern Europe. The organ was completely restored in 1989-1993.

Rathausmarkt

Hamburg City Hall

The old city hall was destroyed in the great fire of 1842. This new city hall was built in 1886-1897. Many notable people visited Hamburg City Hall, such as Emperor Haile Selassie I and Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in 1955, and Queen Elizabeth II in 1965.

After the town hall was destroyed by the great fire of 1842, a new build was built in 1843. Alsterarkaden and five-story houses behind it were built between 1844 to 1846.
Alsterarkaden is a passageway south edge of Alsterfleet canal and north of Kunstmeile Hamburg.
How to go: It is located north of Kunstmeile Hamburg. From Adolph Bridge (west end) to Jungfernstieg near Subway station (east end).


Neuer Wall

St. Catherine's Church

Church

The first evidence of the church's existence dates back to 1256. The original part of Triple Nave, was rebuilt in the mid-15th century. Rooftop was added to the spire in 1657. The church was damaged during World War II, on 30 July 1943. It was restored between 1950 and 1957.
The organ was replaced by a new organ, which was rebuilt in 1670.
Visiting Time: Monday to Friday - 10 AM to 5 PM. Saturday and Sunday - 11 AM to 5 PM.
How to go: It is located about 230 meters from Deutsches Zollmuseum towards west at Katharinenkirchhof 1.



Day-5:

St.-Nikolai-Kirche

Church

St. Nicholas Church original chapel, a wooden building, was completed in 1195. It was replaced by a brick church in 1335. The tower was built in 1517 and it was burned down in 1589. Another tower replaced and it was damaged in 1644.
The old Church of St. Nicholas was burned in the Great Fire of Hamburg of May 1842. The church was completely rebuilt by 1874 with 147.3-meter-high tower, and was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876.
During World War II on 28 July 1943, the church was heavily damaged by aerial bombs. It has not yet been completely rebuilt. Its ruined walls and ruins were removed in 1951, and the tower was repaired in 1990 and 2012. An elevator has been installed and since September 1, 2005, it has been taking visitors to the 75.3-meter-high platform.

Deichstraße

About 250 meters north-south curved is the oldest remaining street, which was first mentioned in 1304. The original buildings of street was destroyed by The Great Fire of 1842.

On 2 April 2007, the foundation stone was laid and construction work officially ended on 31 October 2016. The first public test concert was held on 25 November 2016. The official opening concert took place on 11 January 2017.

Cap San Diego

Museum Ship

The Cap San Diego was built and launched in 1961. The ship ran a regular schedule between Germany and South America, completing 120 round trips until 1981. After the sale, it ran under another name and under the Spanish flag until 1986. She was then bought by the city of Hamburg.
Now the ship is serving as museum.
Visiting Time: 10 AM to 5 PM every day.

Rickmer Rickmers

Museum Ship

Rickmer Rickmers is a sailing ship was built in 1896. It was first used on the Hong Kong route carrying rice and bamboo. In 1912, she was bought by Carl Christian Krabbenhöft. Then renamed 'Max' and transferred to the Hamburg-Chile route. In World War I, Max was captured by the Portuguese government and gave to the United Kingdom as war aid. After World War I, it was returned to the Portuguese government. Then it was turned into a training ship for the Portuguese navy, and was renamed as 'NRP Sagares'. In 1958. She won the Tall Ships' Race. It was purchased by a Hamburg-based company in 1983, renamed Rickmar Rickmars, and turned into a floating museum ship.

The Stintfang is a 26 meter high hill on the bank of the Elbe river. There is a youth hostel on it and a viewing platform in front of the hostel with a view of the port of Hamburg.
How to go: It is located about 300 meters from Rickmer Rickmers towards northwest. North side of Landungsbrücken Subway station.


Alter Elbtunnel

Tunnel

426 meters pedestrian and vehicle tunnel is 24 meters beneath the surface. It was opened in 1911. It connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. Six large lifts carry pedestrians and vehicles to the bottom.
Entry Fee: Pedestrians and bicyclists can use all day and night free of charge.
How to go: It is located about 450 meters from Rickmer Rickmers toeards west. About 50 meters west from Hard Rock Cafe.


U-Boot Museum Hamburg

U-Boot Museum is housed in Soviet submarine B-515. The submarine is sometimes referred to as U-434 and was built in 1976. It was put into service by the Soviet Northern Fleet and remained in service until April 2002.

The first church was built here from 1647 to 1669. That church was destroyed on March 10, 1750 by a lightning strike. The original church has been replicated and built in 9 different cities around the world. New church was built in 1786. It was destroyed by fire in 1906 and reconstructed in 1912.

Bismarck Monument

Monument

It is the world's largest Bismarck monument among 240 memorials to Bismarck worldwide. 35 meters monument was completed in 1906. The monument was dedicated to Otto von Bismarck (1 April 1815 – 30 July 1898).
Bismarck was a conservative German statesman and diplomat. He involved with Prussian politics in 1847. He served as ambassador to France from May 1862. He served as Minister President and Foreign Minister from 23 September 1862 to 1890. He also served as the chancellor of the North German Confederation from 1867 to 1871. He masterminded the unification of Germany in 1871 and served as its first chancellor until 1890.
How to go: It is located about 350 meters from St. Michael's Church towards west.


Millerntorwache

City Gates

The first gate was built at the north of Rödingsmarkt, around the Alter Wall and Graskeller intersection. When the New Wall was built in the 16th century, it was moved about 200 meters to the north-west, near today's Ellerntorsbrücke. In 1621, the gate was moved further west at the present location. In 1806 the gate was demolished and a new gate was built in 1819-1820.
Of the two guardhouses from the 19th century, the northern one, the so-called Millerntor guardhouse, has been preserved to this day. The Millerntorwache has housed the Museum of Hamburg History since 2013.

Feldstraße Bunker (Flakturm IV)

Towers

large anti-aircraft and air-raid protection structures built in concrete with steel. Originally four towers were built during the Second World War, between 1942 and 1944. Two of which were high-rise bunkers with mounted anti-aircraft guns and 2 as smaller control centers. The towers partially meet the military requirements.
The bunker at Feldstrasse, originally called Flakturm IV, is one of the largest ever built in 1942. In the summer of 1943, about 25,000 people took refuge in the bunker and were well protected.
Now a nightclub is located on the top floor in it and the ground floor is home to a large music store.
How to go: It is located about 750 meters from Museum of Hamburg History towards northwest and 870 meters from Heinrich Hertz Tower towards south at Feldstraße next to the U3-station.


FC St. Pauli Museum - 1910 e.V.

The exhibition rooms are located on the ground floor of the Millerntor Stadium. The museum collects, archives, preserves and supplements exhibits on the history of the football club FC St. Pauli. There is a wine bar inside the museum.

Polizeikommissariat 15 – Davidwache

Police Station

The brick building was built from 1913 to 1914 and opened on 10 December 1914. The building is known from many movies and TV series, and it has been called Germany's best-known police station. Paul McCartney (lead vocalist of Beatles) and Pete Best (drummer of Beatles) had to spend a night at the Davidwache.
How to go: It is located at the west of Panik City Betriebs GmbH at Spielbudenpl. 31.


Beatles-Platz

Square

This plaza was built to commemorate Hamburg's importance in The Beatles' history.
How to go: It is located about 320 meters from Polizeikommissariat 15 – Davidwache towards west.



Day-8:

Öjendorfer See

Lake

The two bathing areas are located on the north and south-eastern shores, with small sandy beaches. There are few facilities such as play facilities, mini golf course, barbecue areas, kiosks and snack bars. There is a separate non-swimmer area.
How to go: It is located east end of Hamburg. Steinfurther Allee Subway station is the nearest from the lake. About 1.5 km from the station towards north.


Museum für Bergedorf und die Vierlande

The origin of the Bergdorf fort is not yet clear. A mill was built in 1208, after the dam was built on the river. There was a huge tower, a farm and a residential building with stables and a well.
Until 1420, the complex served as the residence of the Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg. After that, the fort became an administrative seat for both cities. Since 1868, the building has housed various parts of the municipal administration, such as the courts and the police.
Since 1953, the castle has housed the Rieck-Haus open-air museum.
The first floor consists of art exhibits. The upstairs rooms display the cultural history, including the clothing, furniture and equipment used by the people living in the palace and the farming community in the surrounding Vierlande.
