When the Portuguese court moved to Brazil, in 1808, Elias António Lopes donated his farm to Prince Regent John VI. John VI stayed at the Manor House for a long time. The palace has been renovated for decades. A cast iron gate was erected there. A tower was built. A staircase was built to enter the residence on the second floor. The previous tower was rebuilt. Wetland drainage and roads have been improved.
The most important reforms began during Prince Pedro's marriage to the Austrian Archdiocese Maria Leopoldina in 1819 and ended in 1821. the Imperial couple resided in the palace. In front of the palace was placed a decorative portico, a gift sent from England to Brazil by Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland. Inspired by Robert Adams's porch for the "Sion House" in England, the Gate was built.
After Brazil's declaration of independence in 1822, the palace became the residence of Emperor Pedro I. A new tower was added to the left of the main facade, and the third floor of the palace was added. Many rooms in the palace, including the Throne Room and the Ambassador's Room, were decorated with paintings.
The future Queen Maria II of Portugal and the future Emperor Pedro II of Brazil were born here. Empress Maria Leopoldina died in the palace in 1826. Pedro II grew up and was educated in the palace and in 1869 ordered the gardens to be rebuilt. The children of Pedro II, including Princess Isabelle, famous for abolishing slavery from Brazil in 1888, were born in the palace.
After the proclamation of the republic in 1889, the Imperial family left the country and the palace and its surrounding gardens were vacated. In 1891, the building was used by Brazilian politicians to draft the country's first Republican constitution.
In 1892, the director of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro was able to move the institution to the palace. The interior decoration of the palace was scattered, but parts of it are still found in museums.
