Atlanta History Center

33-acre campus features award-winning exhibitions, historic houses, and gardens.
It was built in 1928 for businessman Edward Inman and his wife Emily Inman. 3 years later, Edward Inman died suddenly at the age of 49. Emily asked her eldest son Hugh, his wife Mildred and their two young children to stay with her. Grandchildren Sam and Mimi grew up in the house and moved out after marriage.
Emily lived at Swan House until her death in 1965. In 1966, the Atlanta Historical Society purchased the house and most of its original furnishings, ranging from 18th-century antiques to 20th-century furnishings. It opened to the public in 1967 as a house museum and headquarters for the Atlanta Historical Society.

Goodrum House

Historical Landmark

The May Patterson Goodrum House was completed in 1932. It is also known as the Peacock House.
May E. Patterson (1891-1976) was a native of Atlanta. He worked as a clerk in various retail establishments. James J. Goodrum Jr. (1879-1928) was a native of Newnan, Georgia who founded a chain of retail stores at the age of 27 and sold it to the American Tobacco Company a few years later. Patterson and Goodrum married in New York City in 1926, but Goodrum died in 1928.
Mrs. Goodroom bought land and began building a house. Goodram was living in the house in September 1930 but it was not fully completed until 1932. The gardens were completed in 1936. In May 1938 Goodram married to Francis L. Abreu. In 1958 they sold the house to Mary Phillips Rushton and moved to Sea Island, Georgia where they lived in a beach house called South Wind.
Rushton made some changes to the house, including remodeling the kitchen and adding an elevator. Rushton also kept peacocks on the property and hence the house became known as Peacock House. When Rushton died in 1984, the property was sold to Jerry Cates, who sold parts of the property.
The house was purchased by the Southern Center for International Studies in 1984 and served as the group's headquarters from November of that year until 2009.
The Watson-Brown Foundation purchased the house in 2009. The house is operated as a historic house museum and is available for viewing by appointment only.

Peachtree St NE

About 10.5 km street. There are 71 streets in Atlanta with a variant of “Peachtree” in their name. Sunch as Peachtree Road, Peachtree St, Peachtree St NE, Peachtree St NW, Peachtree Avenue, Peachtree Circle etc. There is a joke by natives that half of the streets in Atlanta are named Peachtree. Peachtree is also seen in place names such as 'Peachtree Center', 'Peachtree City', 'Peachtree Corners'.
How to go: It starts from few meters south from Buckhead Theatre (north end), and headed to south till end of Hardy Ivy Park (south end). Then it changed its name only Peachtree Street.

The Temple

Synagogue

The Temple, formally known as the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation, is a synagogue. It was founded in 1860 to serve the needs of German-Jewish immigrants.
The congregation's previous temple was located at Garnett and Forsyth Streets, downtown from 1875-1902. It then moved to South Pryor and Richardson Streets in Washington-Rawson neighborhood, southeast of downtown from 1902-1929.
The present building was completed in 1931. The Temple was opened with a new pilcher organ. In 1955, the organ was updated and renovated. The renovated organ, one of twelve in the country which bearing G Donald Harrison's signature plate. The organ underwent a major renovation in 2011-2012.

Rhodes Hall

Historic House

Rhodes Memorial Hall, commonly known as Rhodes Hall, is a historic home. It was built for Amos Giles Rhodes, owner of Atlanta-based Rhodes Furniture. After two years of construction, the house was completed in 1904. The beautiful architecture of the house includes stained and painted glass windows, a carved mahogany staircase. After the deaths of Rhodes and his wife, their children deeded the house to the state of Georgia, with a stipulation that it be used for "historic purposes".
State Historian Ruth Blair moved the Georgia Department of Archives and History to the home and lived in it. It was used for the Georgia State Archives from 1930 to 1965. After the archives were moved to the new building, the original staircase and windows were also removed. Rhodes Hall was then used as a branch.
In 1983 Rhodes Hall was transferred to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The original staircase and windows were brought back and reinstalled in 1990.
From 1984 to 1992, the house was a haunted house attraction every year for Halloween, before being renovated and converted into a museum. The Rhodes Hall is used as an event space and offices for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Rhodes Hall is available for hire including weddings, receptions, corporate events, cocktail gatherings and birthday parties.

World Athletes Monument

Also known as the Prince Charles Monument. The monument dedicated to the 1996 Summer Olympics was a gift from the Prince of Wales.
On August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car accident in Paris. During this time, more than 20,000 people gathered around the monument to mourn and pay their respects. The Atlanta City Council dedicated the site as the Prince of Wales Monument in Princess Diana Square.
On June 5, 2004, President Ronald Reagan died and once again thousands of people gathered here to mourn. The monument was covered with flags, candles, flowers and other memorials. This place also became a gathering place for the citizens of Atlanta to celebrate.

The Breman Museum

The museum is dedicated to Jewish history, culture and art, with a special emphasis on Georgia and the Holocaust. The museum opened in 1996 and was named after Atlanta businessman William Breman, a philanthropist active in Atlanta's Jewish community.

Old Leyden House Columns

Historical Site

It was the residence of Austin Leyden and his family. Leyden co-founded the Atlanta Machine Works in 1848. The house was built in 1858 or 59. During the Civil War, commander of the Army of the Cumberland, used the house as his headquarters.
Asa G. Candler bought the property in 1913 for commercial development and demolished the house. Columns from the building were removed to and are preserved at the Old Woodberry School Building in Ansley Park, Atlanta, 149 Peachtree Circle. The Davison's department store was built on the site and still stands.

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta

It was founded on January 8, 1848 and was the first Presbyterian house of worship in Atlanta.
In 1915 the church completed a Sunday School building at the new location where the first service was held on December 5, 1915. The original church building on Marietta Street was vacated in April 1916, and the property was sold to the U.S. government to build the headquarters of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
After the church was finished in 1919, stained glass windows were installed then and in the next few years. The first organ was built in 1919 with 4 manuals. Echo and solo-sections were added in 1920, and the organ had 48 stops. In 1969, an entirely new organ was built using some of the stops from the 1919 organ. The instrument was restored and enlarged in 1992. In 2018 the instrument was again cleaned and restored and newly enlarged. The instrument has 112 ranks (6.397 pipes) in 10 sections, with a control system.

Conversation Peace

Sculpture

Conversation Peace was installed on November 12, 2021, one day after National Origami Day in Japan where the paper crane has become a symbol of peace.
The sculpture was built on a game Rock-Paper-Scissors, a game that is believed to have originated in Asia around 200 BC.
This zero-sum game is played by two people who use their hands to form rock, paper or scissors. Stand opposite your opponent, hide your hand signal behind your back, and reveal it to your opponent following a countdown.
Each gesture carries a certain degree of power that leads to an outcome, which is determined by these rules:
* Rock wins against scissors
* Scissors win against paper
* Paper wins against rock

Day-4:

Margaret Mitchell House

Museum

The house was built for a family in 1899.
In 1907 the family moved to Druid Hills. The house changed hands several times. The building was converted into a ten-unit apartment building in 1919, known as the 'Crescent Apartments'.
A flat in Crescent Apartments was the home of author Margaret “Peggy” Mitchell when she married to John Marsh in July 1925. Mitchell and her husband lived in Apartment no. 1 on the ground floor from 1925 to 1932. Mitchell nicknamed apartment no. 1 “The Dump”. While living there, Mitchell wrote the bulk of her Pulitzer Prize-winning 1936 novel, 'Gone with the Wind'. By 1931, the building had only two occupied apartments, one of which belonged to the author, but they too moved in the spring of 1932. The balconies were removed from the Crescent Avenue side of the building in 1946. By the 1950s, the building was mostly vacant. In 1964, Crescent Apartments was reborn as Windsor House Apartments.
In 1977, the last tenants were evicted. The old Crescent Apartments continued to deteriorate, particularly after a fire in the southwest corner of the building caused minor damage in the late 1980s. In 1989, Mayor helped secure the future of the house. The front of the house was restored as it was in 1899. The rear of the building was restored when Margaret Mitchell called it home.
However, another fire, believed to be arson, destroyed most of the building in September 1994.
In May 1996, the house was again the victim of an arson attempt. The fire occurred at a point where restoration was almost complete and all but Margaret Mitchell's apartment was damaged or destroyed. It was restored later.

The Historic Academy of Medicine

Historic Landmark

The Academy of Medicine was built in 1941 and housed the Medical Association of Atlanta until the 1970s.
In 2008, due to a lack of resources to maintain the facility, Atlanta Medical Heritage donated the Academy of Medicine to the Georgia Tech Foundation, on the condition that the building's name, 'Academy of Medicine', be retained. The Georgia Tech Foundation accepted the gift on behalf of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Fox Theatre

Theater

Originally designed as Yaarab temple. The project went over budget, so they leased the auditorium to William Fox, founder of the Fox Theater. The theater opened on December 25, 1929. A week later, on 1st January, the Shriners inaugurated their new "mosque". It housed executive offices, a large lounge, a ballroom, kitchen, practice hall, and locker-shower rooms. Under the terms of the lease, they remained tenants till 1949.
Due to William Fox was bankrupt by 1932, members of the Yaarab Temple could not meet their mortgage payments. After the mortgage was foreclosed in December 1932, the entire complex was purchased jointly by Paramount Pictures and Lucas & Jenkins.
After saving Fox from demolition, restoration process began. Much of the original decoration survived. Today, the Fox looks just as it did when it opened. The Fox is now the only remaining movie palace in Atlanta and operated under the nonprofit Atlanta Landmarks, Inc.
In June 2006, the theater installed a digital cinema video projection system.

Mary Mac's Tea Room

In 1945, Mary McKenzie opened Mary Mac's Tea Room. Mary Mac's Tea Room was one of 16 tearooms in Atlanta and is the only original tearoom that remains.
The restaurant is known for continuing the culinary tradition of Mackenzie and his successor, Margaret Lupo, who owned the tea house from 1962 to 1994.

Each day they sell through 3 miles of hotdogs, 300 gallons of homemade chili, A ton of onion rings, 2500lbs of potatoes, 5000 fruit turnovers, and More Coca-Cola than any other restaurant in the world.

Rufus Rose House

Historical Landmark

The approximately 5,200 square feet home was built in 1901 for Dr. Rufus M. Rose, former druggist and Civil War doctor. The Rose family lived in this home until 1921.
The Rose family sold the property in 1923. It has changed several hands. In 1945, James H. Elliot Sr. bought the house and used it as an antique store and museum and opened it to the public. The museum closed in 1998. From 1999 to 2001, the house served as the headquarters of the Atlanta Preservation Center.
The house was sold to Gholam Bakhtiari on August 24, 2011 in an auction held by real estate firm Williams & Williams. The home was sold in 2020 to Inman Park Properties. It was then sold again in 2021 to Atlanta-based real estate investment firm UC Asset. Renovation work on the property began in September 2021.

Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse

The Shakespeare Tavern is a playhouse, is home to the Atlanta Shakespeare Company that began production on May 16, 1984 at Manuel's Tavern in Atlanta. In 1990 the tavern moved to 499 Peachtree Street. The Atlanta Shakespeare Company was the first American company to perform on the stage of Shakespeare's Globe in London, England. After renovations and expansion, including a Globe-inspired balcony, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company reopened on October 15, 1999.
In 2004, The Shakespeare Tavern was listed as a major festival in the book Shakespeare Festivals Around the World. In spring 2006, the building underwent renovations with a Globe-inspired facade. In spring 2011, Atlanta Shakespeare Company became the first American company to complete the Shakespearean canon with a production of Edward III, although the play's authorship is disputed. With the opening of Henry VIII on June 2, 2019, Shakespeare's Tavern completes the Shakespeare canon for the second time.

Millennium Gate Museum

The Millennium Gate Museum construction was started 2005 and opened on July 4, 2008. The arch was originally intended for a location in Washington, DC, but failed to gain sufficient government support.
Stoddart's Peace and Justice Gates flanking the arch were awarded the 2006 Palladio Award for Best American Design of a Public Space. The arch inscription reads in Latin: "This American monument was erected to commemorate all the peaceful achievements since the birth of Jesus Christ in the year of our Lord, MM." Reaction to the museum was mixed, with critics claiming the design was inappropriate for the site, but the building was gaining acceptance over time.

Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking

The museum exhibits the largest collection of paper and paper-related artifacts in the world, including watermarks, papers, tools, machines, and manuscripts.
Originally called the Dard Hunter Paper Museum. The museum was started in 1939 by Dard Hunter and was located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Few people visited the museum while at MIT. In 1954 the then Institute of Paper Chemistry of Appleton, Wisconsin offered the museum a prominent location on its campus. In 1989 the Institute of Paper Chemistry was relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and renamed the Institute of Paper Science and Technology.
During the spring of 1993 the museum reopened inside IPST and was renamed the American Museum of Papermaking. In 1996 the museum received a substantial donation from Robert C. Williams, the co-founder of the James River Corporation. As a result, the museum's name was again changed to the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum.
In 2005, through a donation from the Mead-Witter Foundation, an additional exhibition space was added to the museum. This new space was named the George W. Mead Education Center.

The Goat Farm Arts Center

It was built during the 1880s, opened in 1889. Robert Haywood bought the site in the early 1970s. Many sculptors, musicians, painters and photographers have set up studios there. The site had been unused for many years.

Liddell House

Historical Landmark

The second oldest house in Atlanta was built in 1860 by Captain James McAlpin Liddell. During the Civil War he served in a company of the Sixteenth Georgia Regiment. Captain Liddell lived in the house until his death in 1915.
Ownership changed, and its interior was extensively remodeled by the current owners, retaining its original ornamentation such as fireplace mantels, door knobs, hand-blown glass window panes, and heart-pine floors hand-finished with horseshoe nails.

Historic Fourth Ward Park

Currently 17 acres park in 2 sections was built on the site of the old Ponce de Leon amusement park, in the Old Fourth Ward.
The park were completed in 2008. The storm water drainage pond, enabling the park to handle a 500 year flood. In addition to the new pond, the park also includes landscaped walkways, bridges, observation points, grassy fields, as well as a shaded playground and splashpad to help residents escape the heat. A pond with a path around it and fountain and an amphitheater.
As summer begins, the historic Fourth Ward Park also offers a splash pad, which features jets ride. Splash pad is open from May 1 to October 1.
The world-class Historic Fourth Ward Skate park is just south of the main park along the Beltline.

Birth Home of Martin Luther King, Jr

A two-story house was built in 1895 for a white family. The house was purchased in 1909 by Rev. Adam Daniel Williams, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Williams moved into the home with his wife, Jenny Celeste, and their 6-year-old daughter, Alberta Christine.
On November 25, 1926, Christine married a minister named Michael Luther King at her father's church. Luther moved into Christine's parents' house. Born in this home were their three children, Willie Christine, Michael Jr. (later known as Martin Luther King Jr.), and Alfred Daniel. After Christine's parents died, they moved to a new home at 193 Boulevard when Martin Luther King Jr. was twelve years old.
Visiting Time: The Visitor Center, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Fire Station No. 6, and Freedom Hall are open from 9 AM to 5 PM, everyday. The Birth Home is open from 10 AM to 4 PM every day.

Georgia Capitol Museum

Historical Structure

The Georgia State Capitol is an architecturally and historically significant building. It was built in March 1889.
As the primary office building for the government of Georgia, offices in the capitol are on the second floor. The fourth floor houses the visitor's gallery and a museum located near the rotunda where a statue of Miss Freedom caps the dome.
The museum within the Capitol, in existence since 1889, contains the natural and cultural history of Georgia. Illustrating the diversity of Native American artifacts, animals, rocks and minerals, and fossil collections. Portraits of governors, statues of famous Georgians, and historic flags from many battles are displayed throughout the Capitol. All governors elected since 1850 have portraits except Rufus Bullock.
In 2015, the state of Georgia unveiled a large public plaza just east of the Capitol called Liberty Plaza. After it opened, numerous monuments, including replicas of the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty, were moved from other parts of the Capitol grounds to the plaza.

Pratt-Pullman Yard

A plot was used as agricultural land. Pratt Engineering Company purchased the land in 1904. The company uses the land as a sugar and fertilizer processing plant. In 1926, the Pullman Company purchased the property to repair their railroad sleeper cars.
In World War I the land was used for munitions. After 2017, the 27-acre historic site was developed and the site is primarily rented for temporary events. Ahead of the 2022 season, the Fan Controlled Football League built a 1,500-seat arena on the site.
