Belem Tower

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the late 15th century, King John II ordered to build a strong fort. But he died before executed.

King Manuel I of Portugal revisited the proposal twenty years later and ordered the construction of a military fortification on the northern margin of the Tagus at Belém in 1513. The project was started in 1514 and completed in 1519. King Manuel I had died after 2 years in 1521.

Popular Art Museum was inaugurated in 1948.

Padrao dos Descobrimentos

Monument


The monument was temporary constructed by Portuguese architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo, and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, during the Portuguese World Exhibition opening in June 1940. By June 1943, the it was demolished.

Between November 1958 and January 1960, the new monument was constructed.

How to go: It is located 240 meters from Museu de Arte Popular towards east at Avenue Brasília.

Jeronimos Monastery

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was first built a churh in 1495 by King Manuel. The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501. The construction stopped when King Manuel I died in 1521. Work was continued in 1571 by Jérôme de Rouen and stopped again in 1580 with the union of Spain and Portugal.

Philip II, the King of Spain, made the monastery a royal funerary monument on 16 July 1604.

After the Portuguese Independence in 1640, the monastery regained much of its former importance.

Palácio da Ajuda

After the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, King Joseph ordered the construction of a permanent wooden building in the heights of Alto da Ajuda. The construction was completed on 20 September 1761. But, due to the risk of collapse, it was reconstructed from 1767 to 1786. King Joseph died in 1777. Since his successor, Queen Maria I of Portugal lived in the Palace of Queluz.

The first cornerstone was laid on 9 November 1795. The palace began to be used as a Royal Residence in 1826, when the Infanta Isabel Maria, Regent on behalf of the young Queen Maria II, moved in.

Many members of the Royal Family died from typhoid fever in 1861. King Luís moved temporarily to the Palace of Paço de Arcos. Luís and Maria Pia of Savoy (daughter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy) were married in 1861. They moved into the Palace on 16 April 1862.

King Carlos of Portugal was born on 28 September 1863 at this palace.

In 1938 the Palace was opened as a museum, but restricted access (between 1940 and 1968). The palace was opened to the public on 20 August 1968.

São Bento Palace

Saint Benedict's Palace was built in 1598 as Benedictine monastery. Portuguese Parliament was installed in the building in 1834. Meeting place was totally remodeled in 1867. It was destoyed in 1895 by fire and remodeled until 1938. annex building was constructed near the old Palace in 1994-1997.

The interior opens only during temporary exhibitions and on the last Saturday of each month, which also give access to the garden.

Jardim da Estrela

Estrela Basilica

After marriage in 1760, Queen Maria I vowed in front of an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Convent of Carnide, to build a church and convent if she become mother. Princess Maria  gave birth to her first child, Joseph, on 20 August 1761.

Construction began in 1779 and completed on 15 November 1789.

Visiting Time: 10.30 AM to 7.30 PM.

How to go: It is located southwest side of Jardim da Estrela Park.


Casa Fernando Pessoa

Panorâmico de Monsanto

Abandoned restaurant is located on the top of the Monsanto hill. It is now a view point.

Visiting Time: 9 AM to 6 PM.

How to go: Bus number 711 from Marqués de Pombal running  every 20 minutes and go to the stop Avenue Tenente Martins. From there, turn right towards the communication tower, but then turn left twice and go around the military area following the road about 500 meters.


Parque Florestal de Monsanto

Monsanto Forest Park is the view of views of the city, the Tejo River and the Atlantic Ocean.

How to go: You can go by bus.


Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira

The Palace of the Marquesses of Fronteira was built in 1671 as a hunting pavilion.

Visiting Time: June to September - every half an hour from 10.30 AM to 12 PM. October to May - 11 AM and 12 PM. Garden is open from 9.30 AM to 5 PM on weekday and 9.30 AM to 1 PM on Saturday.

Entry Fee: 12 Euro ($14.72) for inside Palace and Garden. 6 Euro ($7.38) for only garden.

How to go: It is located northeast side of Monsanto Hill at Largo São Domingos de Benfica 01.


Aqueduto das Águas Livres

Aqueduct


There were lack of drinking water in Lisbon. So King John V decided to build an aqueduct to bring water from sources. Construction started in 1731. 35 arches were complted in 1744 over the Alcantara valley which covered 941 meters. The unfinished project started to bring water in 1748. Later it was enlarged. It stoped to supply water in 1960s.

Entry Fee: 4 Euro ($4.91) for Aqueduct. 4 Euro ($4.91) for exhibition in the Water Museum + reservoir in Jardim das Amoreiras. 2 Euro ($2.45) for tank in Príncipe Real.

How to go: By tram 24 and get off at the last stop. By bus 702 from Praça Marquês do Pombal to Calçada dos Mestres. Then walk about 120 meters to the aqueduct entrance at ç da Quintinha 6.


Reservatório da Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras

It is the end of Aqueduto das Águas Livres. It was built in 1834.

How to go: It is lcoated about 1 km from Aqueduto das Águas Livres towards southeast at Praça das Amoreiras 10.

Museu Calouste Gulbenkia

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is a encyclopedic art museum in Lisbon.

Visiting Time: Wednesday to Monday - 10 AM to 6 PM. Tuesday, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 and 25 December remains closed.

Entry Fee: 10 Euro ($12.27) for Founder’s Collection. Free for Temporary Exhibitions. 50% discount for age below 30 and above 65.

Free Entry: Every Sunday after 2 PM.

How to go: It is located close to Praça de Espanha at Avenida de Berna, 45A.


Parque Eduardo VII

Edward VII Park is the largest park in central Lisbon on 62 acres of land. Named after Britain's Edward VII.

Santo António de Lisboa

Church


Church of Saint Anthony was the birth place of Saint Anothony. Fernando de Bulhões also known as Saint Anthony, was born in Lisbon in 1195. The house was turned into a small chapel in the 15th century. The chapel was rebuilt in 16th century during the reign of King Manuel I. King John V rebuilt the church in 1730. But it was destroyed in 1755 by earthquake. The present church was fully built in 1767.

Visiting Time: Monday to Friday - 10 AM to 6 PM. Saturday and Sunday - 10 AM to 8 PM.

How to go: It is located about 200 meters from Pombal Square towards south at Largo de Santo António da Sé.

Avenida da Liberdade

The central monument was built in 1886 to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese Restoration War in 1640..

How to go: It is located at the south end of Avenida da Liberdade street and the northeast side of Rossio-Lisboa station.

Attractions:

Foz Palace: Built on the the previous palace, "Marquis of Castelo Melhor", which destroyed in 1755 earthquake. The present palace was built in 1846-1858.

In the 1940s the Palace was acquired by the State. The Palace can only be visited through a guided tour.

Tour Cost: 40 Euro ($49.08).

How to go: It is located west side of Restauradores Square. 


Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Church of Sao Roque

A shrine was started to build on 24 March 1506. A Brotherhood was established to take care of the shrine in 1527. The Brotherhood still exists today.

New church was built on the place of the shrine. The construction was started in 1555. It was completed in 1519.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Doctrine was built on 1 April 1634.

Chapel of St. Francis Xavier was built in 1634.

Chapel of St. Roch was completed in second half of the 16th century.

Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament was built in 1634.

Chapel of the Holy Family was built in 1634.

Chapel of St. Anthony was built in 1635.

Chapel of Our Lady of Piety was built in 1686-1711.

Chapel of St. John the Baptist was built in 1640.

There is a museum of Igreja of Sao Roque.

Cais do Sodré

Not be confused that there is a Train station, a metro station and an area are the different things but same name "Cais do Sodré". there are also transit station and bus station. But the same name 'Cais Sodre'. All stations are located at the south end of the neibourhood 'Cais do Sodré' on the north bank of Tagus river.

Official name of the street is Rua Nova do Carvalho. it was a meeting point for local criminals, streetwalkers, and prostitutes. It turned into pink in 2013. Now the pedestrian street is popular street for nightlife. There are bars, Lingerie shop and sex.

How to go: The south end of the road is located about 100 meters from Mercado da Ribeira towards east.

Igreja de São Domingos

Church of St. Dominic was built in 1241 and was the largest church in Lisbon. It was completely destroyed in 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in 1807. The church was damaged by fire in 1959. It was reopened in 1994.

Old Church of Our Lady of the Conception

The original church building was built in 1498. After the 1 November 1755 earthquake, the building destroyed and rebuilt again in 1770.

How to go: It is located about 200 meters from the Rua Augusta Arch towards east at Rua da Alfândega 108.


Casa dos Bicos

Museum


The house was built in 1523 by Afonso de Albuquerque. He died in 1581. During 1755 Lisbon earthquake, it was damaged. In 1772 the building was partially reconstructed as before. In 1873, Albuquerque family sold the building to a fishmonger, Joaquim C. Lopes da Silva.

In 1960s, it was acquired by the municipal council of Lisbon. After 1982, the building was restored and transformed in a museum.

In June 2012, the Casa dos Bicos became the head office of the José Saramago Foundation.

How to go: It is located at 120 meters from Old Church of Our Lady towards east at Rua dos Bacalhoeiros 10.


Lisbon Cathedral

A new cathedral was started to built on the site of the main mosque of Lisbon in 1147. It was complted in the first decades of the 13th century. 

In 1755, earthquake destroyed the Gothic main chapel along with the royal pantheon. The cathedral was partially rebuilt. In the beginning of the 20th century, it was renovated at the present form.

Visiting Time: 9 AM to 7 PM every day.

Castelo de Sao Jorge

It is thought that, the first fortification was built in 48 BC.

During the 10th century, the fortifications were rebuilt by Muslim Berber forces.

When Lisbon became the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1255, the castle served as a fortified residence for King Afonso III. It was renovated around 1300 by King Denis I and transformed into the Royal Palace of the Alcáçova.

Between 1373 and 1375, King Ferdinand I ordered to build wall (which partially replaced the old walls), 77 towers, 34 or 38 gates, and a perimeter of 5,400 metres. It was converted from a castle to a royal residence in between 1449 to 1452.

An earthquake occurring in 1531 damaged the castle. In 1569, King Sebastian ordered the rebuilding of the royal apartments in the castle, intending to use it as his official residence but never finished. Later it was converted into military barracks and a prison.

In 1648, after the Portugal independence Restoration works were started by the Portuguese government. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the castle was damaged severely. The first observatory in Portugal was built in 1788 at the top of a tower.

By the 1930s, the government initiated extensive renovations at the site.

How to go: It is located about 650 meters from Lisbon Cathedral towards north up on the hill. By tram 28 to Largo das Portas do Sol.

Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls was first built in 1147.

The first church was built in 1568. The present church was built in 1682-1712 on the same place. But the chuch was not completed before 1966.

Palácio de Mafra

The Palace of Mafra is a Palace-Convent was started to built on November 17, 1717 by King John V. The basilica and the convent were inaugurated on October 22, 1730. But the work continued till 1755.

Queluz National Palace

The constraction of the palace started in 1747 as summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza (Later the husband of Queen Maria I). Dom Pedro of Braganza died in 1786. After the Ajuda Palace was destroyed by fire in 1794, the Quiluz Palace became the official residence of Prince John VI and his family and left the palace in 1807 and went to Brazil. French forces captured the palace. The Prince John VI returned in 1821 and preferred to live at Mafra.

Visiting Time: 9 AM to 5.30 PM every day.

Entry Fee: 8.50 Euro ($10.43) for adult and 7 Euro ($8.59) for child.

How to go: By train from Lisbon.
