President Bernardino Rivadavia modified the fort in 1820. It was used as the defence purposes and also seat of the Spanish and Home governments. A New Customs House was built in 1855 at the rear walls of the Fort. The south wing was demolished and constructed a Postal headquarters by the order of President Domingo Sarmiento in 1873 and completed in 1879. Compared to this new post office building, the government house looks absolutely insignificant. So, President Julio Roca (president: 1880 to 1886 and 1898 to 1904) ordered the demolition of the fort and the construction of another building similar to the post office in 1882. Due to lack of space, the post office building was later included in the Government House. Construction was completed in 1886. The new building was officially inaugurated in 1898.
