Archaeological Site of the Lyceum of Aristotle

Aristotle at aged 50, returned from Asia In 335 BC. He founded here a Peripatetic school of philosophy and a library in 334 BC. In 322 BC, Aristotle was forced to flee Athens with his family due to political issue, but the school continued to function under few leaders until in 86 BC.
During a 1996 excavation the remains of Lyceum were uncovered.

Hellenic Parliament

It was the Old Royal Palace which was built in 1836-1843 for King Otto Friedrich Ludwig (1 June 1815 – 26 July 1867).
It was damaged by fire in 1909 and renovated. Some of the royal family continued to reside here until 1922. After that the building was used for many different purposes. In November 1929 the government decided that the building would permanently house Parliament and renovated. It is now Hellenic Parliament since 1934.

National Historical Museum

There was a house at this place of politician Alexandros Kontostavlos (1789 - 1856). After Athens became the capital of Greece in 1833, It became the temporary residence of King Otto (1 June 1815 – 26 July 1867). The house burned down in a fire in October 1854. Construction of a new building was began in August 1858 by Queen Amalia. The construction stopped due to lack of funds and restart in 1963. It was completed in 1871. It was used as a parliament from 1875 to 1935.
The National Historical Museum was founded in 1882 and moved to Old parliament building after renovation in 1961.

Strefi Hill
Hill
Limestone hill is 150 meters above sea level. The hill belonged to the Strefis family. They operated a stone quarry until the 1920s. After the quarry was closed and the area was opened to the public in 1938. Strefis family was donated the hill to the city of Athens in 1963. On the hill, there is a small open-air theater, a basketball court, and a cafeteria.

Tzisdarakis Mosque

The mosque was built in 1759, by the Ottoman governor of Athens, Mustapha Agha Tzistarakis.
During the Greek War of Independence (1821 - 1830), the building was used as an assembly hall. After Greek independence, it was used as a ball in honor of King Otto of Greece in March 1834, and was also as a barracks, a prison and a storehouse.
It was used as a Museum of Greek Handwork from 1918 to 1973. Between this time, it was also provide a place of prayer during the stay of the King Saud of Saudi Arabia in 1966. The museum was moved in 1973. The building was damaged by an earthquake and was re-opened to the public in 1991.

It was built in 132 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian. 3 churches were built at the site - tetraconch (5th century AD), three-aisled basilica (7th century), and simple cathedral (12th century).

Choragic Monument of Lysicrates

The Monument was built by the Lysicrates, to commemorate the winner in the dithyramb contest which was held in 335 or 334 BC. Dithyramb was one kind of ancient Greek hymn song and dance which used to play in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility.
How to go: It is located 40 meters west from the south end of Adrianou street.

Church of Virgin Mary Gorgoepekoos and Saint Eleutherius
Church
Also called Little Metropolis. The construction date is unkonwn. From various sources, it was built between 9th to 13th Century on the ruins ancient temple.
Following the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830), the church was abandoned. It housed the public library from 1841 to 1863. After 1863, it was again dedicated as a church.
How to go: It is located on Mitropoleos square, south side of Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Church
Also called the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea is one of the oldest church. It is estimated that the church was built around 1050.

First Cemetery of Athens

It opened in 1837. There are three churches inside the premises. Church of Saint Theodores, church of Saint Lazarus and church of Saint Charles.

Panathenaic Stadium

It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.
An 260 meters long stadium was built in the 4th century BC. Later reconstructed in 143 AD. The new stadium was built completely in Pentelic marble with capacity of 50,000.
Excavation was conducted in 1836 and then later in 1869–70. The Zappas Olympics were held at the stadium in 1870 and 1875. The stadium was reconstucted and opened on 5 April 1896 before 1896 Olympics. The stadium held the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1896 Olympics. The stadium was filled with an estimated 80,000 spectators.
The stadium hosted the 1906 Intercalated Games from 22 April to 2 May. On 4 April 1968, the 1967–68 FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup final was hosted in the stadium.

It was used during the 1896 Summer Olympics and as Olympic Village in 1906. The Athens Radio Station, the country's first national broadcaster used this building from 1938 to 1970. It is now using as a Conference and Exhibition Center.

Temple of Olympian Zeus

There was a temple at this place was built around 550 BC by the tyrant Peisistratus. The temple was demolished and new temple of Olympian Zeus was started to built in 520 BC by his sons Hippias and Hipparchos. The work had stopped in 510 BC and remained unfinished. It was started again by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 174 BC. He was changed the design. The work stopped again in 164 BC with the death of Antiochus. Serious damaged on the Partly built temple in 86 BC. Few columns were used for many purposes, such as for Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill, Rome. Temple of Olympian Zeus was finally completed in 638 AD by Hadrian. It had 104 columns. There were only 21 of the original 104 columns still standing by 1436. One of the column was used to make plaster for the Tzistarakis Mosque on 27 April 1759. 15 columns remain standing today.

Parthenon

The temple was built in 447-438 BC. Decoration was continued until 432 BC. It was built on an old temple, which was built around 525-500 BC and destroyed in 480 BC.
The Parthenon was seriously damaged due to fire in the middle of the third century AD and repaired in the 4th century AD.
The Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the 6th century AD.
In the end of fifteenth century, the Parthenon was converted into a mosque by Ottoman.
Parthenon was damaged during Morean War (1684–1699).
After a long time of independence of Greece in 1832, the restoration process of Parthenon was started in 1980s.

Museum of Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou

It exhibits the private collection (clay and stone vases and figurines, busts, jewellery, weapons, coins and inscriptions, ranging from 3000-1200 BC to the 18th and 19th centuries AD) of Paul and Alexandra Kanellopoulos. The building was built in 1864. The house was belonged to Michalea family and later Gree state purchased it in 1960s-1970s.

Tower of the Winds is a clock tower. It is considered the world's first meteorological station was built around 50 BC. Many sources said it might have been built in the 2nd century BC. The structure features a combination of sundials, a water clock, and a wind vane.
