It is an area including White House and it's surrounding places, such as Eisenhower Executive Office Building (west side of White House), the Treasury Building (east side of White House), the White House north and south lawns, Lafayette Square (north side of Pennsylvania Avenue), The Ellipse (south side of south lawn), the White House Visitor Center (northeast corner of Ellipse).

Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest

There are 2 streets with same name and one is not connected with other. One is About 1.5 km east-west street, from where you can see White house from a distant totally free. Another part is about 2 km east-west street.
How to go: 1st road starts from the west end of New York Avenue, where the Bank of America Financial Center is located. About 420 meters from National Museum of Women in the Arts towards southwest. The road headed to straight west about 480 meters. From the middle of the road, you can see the view of White house after the White House North Lawn, is located on the south. Lafayette Square on the other side at the north. After 480 meters, the road turns towards northwest. At the end of the road, there is a roundabout, Washington Circle Park. There is George Washington Statue on the center of the park. 2nd road starts from White House visitor center (west end) to Peace Circle near United States Capitol (east end).


The White House

Residence and Office

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States.
Construction of the White House started at noon on October 13, 1792. Primarily completed in November 1800.
John Adams (2nd President of United States) became the first president to take residence in the building on Saturday, November 1, 1800. Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of United States 1801-1809) moved here in 1801.
White House was almost damaged by fire for British troops in 1814. It was reconstructed from 1815 to 1817. Later it was reconstructed and restored many times.
Visiting Information: Public tours of the White House are available. Requests must be submitted through one's member of Congress and submitted up to three months in advance and no less than 21 days prior to your visit. If you're an international visitor, you have to contact your home country’s embassy in Washington, DC. Self-guided tours run Tuesday to Thursday - 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Friday and Saturday - 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Required to present a valid government-issued photo ID. Foreign nationals must present their passport. You can't carry backpacks, food, large handbags, bottled water, etc. Smartphones and compact cameras with a lens no longer than 3 inches are permitted on the public tour route, but video recording devices and flash photography are not allowed inside the White House.
Without tour you can see the White House and its north lawn from Pennsylvania Avenue NW. White House and its the South Lawn from the Ellipse.

Lafayette Square

General Tadeusz Kosciuszko Statue is located at the northeast corner of the park. It was erected on May 11, 1910. Major General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben Statue is located at the northwest corner of the park. It was erected in 1910. Major General Comte Jean de Rochambeau statue is located on the southwest corner of the park. It was erected in 1902.
Federal Circuit Library is located east end of the park.

United States Capitol

Capitol Building is the meeting place of the United States Congress. The first building construction was started in November 1791. The Senate (north) wing was completed in 1800. The Capitol held its first session of the United States Congress with both chambers in session on November 17, 1800. House of Representatives (south) wing was completed in 1811. Not long after the completion of both wings, the Capitol was partially burned by the British on August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812. In 1850, the Capitol was expanded more than doubled the length. The East Front of the Capitol building was rebuilt in 1904. Later it was expanded several times.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

Historic Place

Frederick Douglass's site was purchased by John Van Hook in about 1855. He built the present house. The house was owned by the Freedom Savings and Trust Company in 1877. Douglass was appointed marshal for the District of Columbia after 1876. He purchased the 20-room Victorian home on 9 acres and named it named Cedar Hill in 1878. He bought an additional 15 acres around the property in 1879. Douglass died on February 20, 1895.

President Lincoln's Cottage

The cottage was built from 1842 to 1843 as the home of George Washington Riggs, a businessman and banker. President Abraham Lincoln and family lived in the cottage from June to November in 1862-1864.

U Street

Also called U Street Corridor is a neighborhood. Black entertainment hub. One of the most significant African American area. Popular for Zazz music and nightlife. The U Street Corridor bounded by Florida avenue and Columbia Heights neighborhood to the north. S street, the Logan Circle and Shaw neighborhood to the south. 9th street, LeDroit Park neighborhood, Howard University and the Shaw neighborhood to the east. 15th street, the Adams Morgan neighborhood and Dupont Circle neighborhood, and 16th Street to the west.
U Street Northwest is the street in U Street Corridor between 9th Street (east end) and 16th Street (west end).

Washington Monument

169.294 meters Obelisk was built to commemorate George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797). Construction began in 1848. The American Civil War (1861–1865), halted all work on the monument. Construction resumed in 1879 and finally completed in 1884. The monument opened to the public on October 9, 1888.

Fort Stevens

The fort was built in 1861 as "Fort Massachusetts". It was renamed "Fort Stevens" after Brig. Gen. Isaac Ingalls Stevens, who was killed at the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia, on September 1, 1862.
How to go: It is about 550 meters from Rock Creek Park Public Golf Course towards east at 6001 13th Street NW. If you come through 14th street, get off at 14th Street & Fort Stevens Drive. From there, walk about 300 meters towards east.

How to go: If you come through 14th street, get off at 14th Street & Fort Stevens Drive. From there, walk about 250 meters towards west and you will reach at Rock Creek Park Public Golf Course. Friendship Heights Metro Station or Fort Totten Metro Station are the closest. By bus E-4 from either Metro stop. By bus from the Friendship Heights Metro Station, you will get off of the bus at the Military + Glover stop. By bus from the Fort Totten Metro Station, you will get off of the bus at the Military + Oregon stop.
Inside the Premises:
Rock Creek Park Public Golf Course: It is open 6:30 AM to 7 PM.
Milkhouse Ford: Located just west side of Golf Course. It has a few picnic tables and benches.
Miller Cabin: It is located 100 meters south of Milkhouse Ford. Poet Joaquin Miller built this rustic split-log cabin at 16th and Belmont streets NW in the 1880s. It was moved to this location in 1912 to be used as a shelter.
Fort DeRussy: It is located about 330 meters from Miller Cabin towards west. It was built in 1861. It was named for Gustavus A. DeRussy, or his father, René Edward DeRussy. The fort provided support during the nearby Battle of Fort Stevens (July 11–12, 1864).
Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium: It is located about 400 meters from Fort DeRussy towards south. Park's visitor center and offers hiking information, brochures and maps.
Rock Creek Park Horse Center: It is located about 240 meters from Nature Center towards southeast. You can take horse ride 1 hour long at 60 Dollar, lessons or camps.
Rapids Bridge: It is located about 820 meters from Horse Center towards southeast.
Rock Creek Park Tennis Center: It is located about 350 meters from Rapids Bridge toward east.
Carter Barron Amphitheater: It is located about 430 meters from Tennis Center towards south. 4,200-seat open theater was opened in 1950.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens

The house was built in the 1920s by Mrs. Delos A. Blodgett for her daughter, Helen Blodgett Erwin. Marjorie Merriweather Post (March 15, 1887 – September 12, 1973) bought this house and renovated the house. Renovation was completed in 1956. She decorated the house with her private collections. Hillwood features over 17,000 objects from the original collection and selected objects collected after Post's death.

Peirce Mill: Historic mill was built in 1820 or 1829 by Issac Peirce. The United States Government bought the mill in 1892. It was restored in March 1936. The mill was used from December 1, 1936 until 1958 to provide flour for government cafeterias. The mill was shut down in April, 1993. It is located about 440 meters from Pulpit Rock towards south
Jules Jusserand Memorial: A bench, honors French Ambassador Jules Jusserand, who frequently explored the park on long rambles with President Theodore Roosevelt. It is located about 350 meters from Peirce Mill towards south.
Bluff Bridge: It is located about 300 meters from Jules Jusserand Memorial bench towards east.

Washington National Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Construction started on September 29, 1907. Bethlehem Chapel opened for services in the unfinished cathedral in 1912. The cathedral was completed in 1988.
How to go: It is located about 1.5 km from National Zoo towards west at 3101 Wisconsin avenue NW.

It was originally the home of Thomas Peter and his wife, Martha Parke Custis Peter. Peter family was lived here from 1805 until 1983. Tudor Place opened to the public in October 1988.

Old Stone House

Oldest unchanged building was built in 1765 by Christopher and his wife Rachel Layman. Cristopher died in 1765 and his widow sold the house to Cassandra Chew. She constructed the rear kitchen in 1767 and a second floor between 1767 and 1775. Chew died in 1807, the house remained in the family until 1875. Federal government purchased the property. After the renovation, the Old Stone House was opened to the public in 1960.

88.5-acre island. After crossing footbridge you can hike round the park then finally stop at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Plaza.

How to go: The Island is accessible by a footbridge from Virginia bank of the Potomac River. From John F. Kennedy Center, you have to cross Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, which crosses but does not allow access to the island. From bridge turn right (north) and walk along the river bank, you will get footbridge. Total distance from John F. Kennedy Center is 1.5 km.


George Washington Memorial Parkway

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

620 meter long (east-west) and 51 meter wide pool was constructed in 1922-1923. Lincoln Memorial on west end and World War II Memorial on the east end.

World War II Memorial

It was opened on April 29, 2004 to commemorate the Americans who served in the armed forces and as civilians during World War II. It consists of 56 pillars, representing U.S. states and territories, and a pair of small triumphal arches for the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. The memorial was dedicated by President George W. Bush on May 29, 2004.
How to go: It is located east end of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in National Mall.


Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The wall was established on November 13, 1982, honoring service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War (1 November 1955 - 30 April 1975).
How to go: It is located north side of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

The Three Soldiers: The Three Servicemen statue was unveiled on November 11, 1984.
Vietnam Women's Memorial: It was established in 1993 to dedicate the women of the United States who served in the Vietnam War.


Korean War Veterans Memorial

The memorial was built and dedicated on July 27, 1995 to commemorate those who served in the Korean War (25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953).
How to go: Is is located south side of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.


Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

The memorial was built and opened on August 22, 2011 to commemorate the Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.
How to go: It is located southeast of Korean War Veterans Memorial, on the bank of Tidal Basin, man-made reservoir.


Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

It was built on May 2, 1997 to commemorate Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States.
How to go: It is located about 400 meters from Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial towards southeast near Tidal Basin, man-made reservoir.


Thomas Jefferson Memorial

It was built in 1939-1943 to commemorate Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States.
How to go: It is located about 600 meters from Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial towards east on the bank of Tidal Basin, man-made reservoir.

United States Holocaust Memorial

Visiting Time: Thursday to Tuesday - 10 AM to 8:30 PM.
Entry Fee: Free.
How to go: It is located northeast corner of Tidal Basin, man-made reservoir at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl SW.


Freer Gallery of Art
